I don't know if you know this...but in an EXPERIMENT, the ATF distributed assault guns to drug dealers in Mexico..to see if they ended up back in the US used in crimes....(which they did)

Are we THAT backward in our thinking? Captain Obvious, take the wheel at the ATF, please...

CBS covered it...a DEA agent was murdered by one of those guns...

The "payload" they "garnished" seems unfortunately disproportionate; they probably didn't even break even with all the man power the agencies expended, compared to the cash and assets they seized.

Your question came up elsewhere, which prompted me to do some math....

Giving generous leeway, I allotted 1 DEA Agent per suspect, which came to 2,000. I allotted approximately 1 years work and salary to cover the sting, including overtime, and figured $100,000 per agent is a fair general number considering their tiered base pay range runs the gamut from $19,000 all the way up to $153,000.

    http://www.opm.gov/oca/06tables/indexLEO.asp

    That came out to a mind-boggling $200,000,000!

If we took the $65 million cash netted, that doesn't cover even 1/3 of the annual salaries (of 2000 agents).

I must factor in that agents also work on other busts, and they employ local agents to assist in the final raids who make much less. Also that often times 2-10 people at a time are rounded up in a single raid. And that there will also be property, guns, gold, luxury cars from the raid..all that will liquefy into cash...but you are right to notice that, which I didn't..it really isn't much money netted for all the arrests made.

(PS: I must warn you I suck at math so feel free to correct any of my equations if I was off)

As a legal immigrant who did all her paperwork, paid all her (ridiculously high) fees (and trust, it was fee after fee), took all her blood tests, had no criminal background before applying, and ZERO criminal since becoming a resident...RESPECTING and doing all the US Government asked of me to be able to work and live here (and appreciating WHY they have the vetting steps in place)...I have zero sympathy for illegals or liars/criminals who seek asylum on false pretenses.
To illegals I have eight words..."get in line like the rest of us"
