At 11am on Boxing Day(7pmEST Dec 25) the fight that change boxing forever happened at Rushcutter's Bay in Sydney between Jack Johnson and Tommy Burns. I hope our Aussie members read the papers on the anniversary like the Sydney Morning Herald and maybe others. One could imagine Blacks at a newspaper at the telegraph office knowing of the fight. Most of the papers did not cover it only the Black ones a week later. It must had been exciting when Johnson won a wonderful Christmas present to tell the family about. No question there was partying in Harlem,Chicago where Johnson lived, and other places in the US. In the South however they did it quietly.
Soulthinker, I would like to talk to you some day about your travels abroad I find your testimonies down to earth yet facinating
I have always been aware of Jack Johnson since I watched the James Earl Jones movie when I was a kid in the 70s. It wasn't until I saw the PBS documentary a few years ago though that I realized how brash and open he was about his love for white women, and how he lived life on the edge. He was true pioneer in sport and socially.
He was indeed Sir Nose. He lived in Europe during his exile from the States. E-mail me when you have time.
Sure, just let me have your email addy. Have you seen the Burns documentary? If not, you are in for a treat.
I had seen the Jack Johnson documentary and met Ken Burns myself. Great guy. Click my name and find contacts.
He kicked ass in the ring and did his own thing, no matter if others disapproved of it. What an admirable person :smt023
