Marilyn Monroe was pretty obsessive about keeping herself in great shape and other things like self improvement. She wanted to be taken seriously as an actress. This was the way she did it. Too bad she died. This style must've inspired the song Short Shorts(co-written by Bob Gaudio).

She was in her late 40s at the time and may be the earliest photograph taken of her.
