The Kanem-Bornu Empire was an empire that existed in what is now modern Chad and Nigeria. The photo is of Bornu body guards for the Shehu (or ruler) of the Dikwa Bornu Emirate in Nigeria....photo from around 1917 to 1920s. This role was extremely important socially. Riders all wear quilted armour... Riders all have kwalkwali (helmuts).. likely brass headpieces, and decorative ostrich feathers. They carried wide bladed takoubas and swords These men are bodyguards to the Shehu, the cream of the crop in terms of the cavalry (and) carry weapons with heritage and quality.
