If you're going to detain a shopper for suspicious behavior, and by behavior I mean being NOT WHITE, you might as well have a sign on the door that says, 'Whites Only'. People are getting away from the point that theses shoppers PAID for their purchases and committed no crime. You got it right. Honestly, no amount of justification makes racial profiling ok. Period. This argument could go back and forth until people are blue in the face, but at the end of the day, most people can recognize the injustice of (and stand against) racial profiling. I was told by a guy who works as a floor manager in a retail store that in a lot of these places, they tell the cashiers to let transactions go through for "suspicious" shoppers so they can build a stronger case for fraud if an actual purchase is made with a card. If the cashiers think that you're "suspicious" they call in store security or undercover police who are working the store to detain you. That means that it doesn't matter if you've got your name on the card and valid ID. The decision on whether or not you get detained by authorities is left to some idiot store clerk who's been told to give extra scrutiny to non-white shoppers or just black people.
