If you aren't very fond of your boss and wish he would take a job elsewhere, the feeling is probably mutual, new research shows.

A study by CareerBuilder revealed that more than a quarter of bosses have an employee who reports to them that they would like to see leave the company. The results were nearly equal by gender, but varied significantly by age, with 32 percent of younger managers, those under age 35, having an employee they would like to leave, compared to just 24 percent of managers over 55.

Rosemary Haefner, vice president of human resources for CareerBuilder, said it's important that managers be as direct as possible when dealing with employees who, for whatever reason, aren't a good fit for their teams.

[7 Signs It's Time to Quit Your Job]

"Fortunately, a plurality of managers in our survey were open to confronting the situation through a formal discussion or warning; however, some will do nothing at all, or even resort to passive aggressive behaviors that can only prolong a negative working arrangement," Haefner said. "It's important that workers be aware of such warning signs, and if necessary, take steps to improve their situations."

The research found that when dealing with an employee they would like to leave, the most popular method for managers is to issue a formal warning.

However, bosses aren't always as straightforward. Other things the study discovered managers are more likely to do that may serve as a red flag for workers include regularly pointing out shortcomings in the employee's performance, reducing their responsibilities, hiring someone else to eventually replace the employee and moving them to another work area.

In addition, keeping employees out of the loop regarding new company developments, communicating primarily over email instead of in-person or on the phone, excluding them from certain meetings and projects and not inviting them to social gatherings with co-workers are all things bosses report doing to try and let employees know they would be best served working somewhere else.

For those employees who do think their boss isn't very happy with them, Haefner offers several tips to help repair the relationship, including:
•Recommit to performance: Employees should identify areas they can improve immediately and display their commitment to the company's objectives. More than 60 percent of managers say the best thing a worker can do after a falling-out with the boss is to simply improve the quality of work. In most cases, the negative attitudes will be history.
•Don't hold a grudge or gossip: Nearly 60 percent of managers think one's ability to "move forward and not hold a grudge" is important to repairing working relationships. This is a two-way street, of course, but workers who are able to display professionalism in spite of personal differences will be in a better position to navigate office politics. Similarly, 38 percent of managers say simply not discussing the falling-out with other colleagues is a smart way to repair a relationship.
•Rewrite the terms: Employees who sense their manager is pushing them away must take pre-emptive action by presenting ideas that may improve the working relationship. Workers have the right to clear expectations of their roles and responsibilities. A conversation that redefines or clarifies those expectations is sometimes necessary.

The study was based on surveys of 2,184 U.S.-based hiring managers and human resource professionals.

I had a very difficult relationship w my boss for years. I finally said 'fuck it' and decided to look at what I could affect and what I had power over. Me, not him.

I set up weekly teleconferences with him and involved him in everything I did, cc'd him on all internal e-mail. I hated every minute of it but that was the only things I had power over. I was transparent in each step of the way and owned my shortcomings (authority issues lol). I set up goals and plans I shared with him and took his tremendous shortcomings out of the picture ( he is an extreme control freak and micromanager- which is why our relationship went awry to begin with). I finally, after being bullheaded, decided, I have to either get another job, or just make him think I play his game.

Nothing in my day to day work changed, i just included him in e v e r y t h i n g and outlined my outlook calendar to minutia level so he had full insight. I wasn't a poor performer, I just didn't communicated with him the way he wanted.

All of a sudden, he is completely off my back and his insane requests stopped.

Sometimes he asked for stuff like ' forward me all your e-mail communications for today', I'm a fucking PhD, and have been a top performers for 8 years, was my earlier thought, the proof is in my performance, why does he need to do this shit... Well, all that craziness stopped once I just too a breath and swallowed my dumb pride. I want to keep my job, lol.

It worked, I just have to play his game, make him feel like I look up to him and all is good. Lol. So simple! Why I didn't do thus before. I can be really stupid:smt091

    It was very hard.

I don't think its brown nosing, I don't suck up to him at all. I just had enough of our difficult relationship that made my job miserable. I just 'influenced him without authority' and made him think he is calling the shots.

I wouldn't survive this job another year w that relationship so I needed to change what I can change. Me. Not him.

I can switch jobs once I get my green card, can't afford to lose my job until then. Simple. I need to make it work.

I have been milking all visas. A green card is expensive. Couldnt afford to do it on my own. Besides the fact that it has to be justified, you cant just apply for a green card willynilly, you have to have something. When I got thus job, they decided to sponsor me after 2 years, since the, there has been numerous screwups on the behalf of the lawyerfirm my company hired that cost me years and nerves w 2 rejections based on poor proofreading in the lawyers behalf. Had to start from scratch 3 times. And it is not a fast or simple process. My company got me another lawyer firm last year and the 3rd application went in about 2 months ago. Now its a waiting game. Probably get an answer in 6 to 8 months.

This is why I was depressed last year, this process and all the misstakes and sloppiness took a toll on my nerves. You see, if you are rejected, you have 30 days to leave the country. I have lived here firv20 years! I have no life in Sweden and I own a house here, too mush emotional stress. If this one doesn't take, I'm out of options.. I have run out of visas to use that saved me before. My time is up November 2014, if its not solved by then, I'm shipped back to Sweden.

Having a PhD and not costing this system a dime on my upbringing or education doesn't matter. Its not how it works. Illegals get more privileges than legals do unfortunately, at least here in California.

You're right and its sickening. We need to talk about this off site at some point I hate hearing about good people getting fucked when worthless people who cost the system millions get to stay.

Something that drives me nuts. Here in Cali, illegals are eligible for college grants. As a graduate student, I payed taxes on my14 k ta pay. Was not eligible for school grants, but my tax money, partly, went to school grants for illegals. Granted, these are illegals who got brought here as infants by their parents, but how fucking unfair is that!

You know where to find me. Fb.

    Sharpton isn't on FAUX.
He's on Nbcmsn (I think) and as a democrat he's sympathetic to minorities and immigration and illegals.
    Ftr, I hate that word.

I'm not sure if that's where GL was going with that or if I spoke for hm. Also, I'm not saying you should call.
That a choice you'd have to make.
