Great pic Christine. Why crocodiles keep their mouth open? Crocodiles open their mouths for 2 reasons: to cool off and to let spur-winged plovers get rid of parasites. the cooling is possible because the open mouth has more volume (surface area) for heat to escape.

:smt042 but to defend myself...the pic I've seen was funny. Mom,Dad, one teenager and a baby-crocodile..all were lying in the sun with an open mouth, they didn't move. I was standing there, observing. i know that dogs i.e. use it for air-conditioning, but they close it from time to time. And heat, they are directly in front of water, where they can go in...so I was never dreaming of cooling down and the other thought I've had was that the mouth must get damn dry:smt115..
