Well, I've got another question, it's related to college again. What are the really important reasons of why HBCUs exist in this country (specifically to attend a college catering exclusively to black people) instead of just having colleges without a racial barrier to it? Basically those other colleges are thought of as being "white" colleges even though at least some of them are diverse demographically. I find it pretty bothersome when I think about this. There's only one HBCU that has my degree program and that's North Carolina A&T, I can't go there.
Historically Black Colleges and Universities exist out of necessity, historical, social and economic. Historically, these institutions were the only option for people of color who were interested in obtaining a higher education. While it's true that there was token representation of African Americans at some colleges and universities, the diversity that you see today is a fairly modern trend in the last 40 years. Given the fact that society today still has racial issues, especially regarding African Americans, not everyone feels as comfortable in a multi-racial setting. If students can thrive and learn in a setting surrounded by people like themselves, then they serve a very good purpose. The opportunity to gain admissions, play sports, join the band, join a fraternity or sorority and obtain academic/sports scholarships are improved because there're fewer barriers toward acceptance. I did not attend a HBCU but I do understand their role, and I believe that they continue to serve the African American community well. By the way, you should be aware than there are non-African American students who make the decision to attend these schools also.
You are going to have to decide what type of adult you want to be in life. Are you going to be a man who runs his life based on what OTHERS think is best for him? Or are you going to be a man who knows what he wants and likes, and lives life on HIS terms, not his mommys, daddys,or anyone elses. Even tho I am a well-seasoned adult, my own elderly mother is admittedly racist. Oh, she wont admit it openly, but she makes it clear where she stands with her little jabs and comments. She is not at all happy I am with a BM now, but that is HER problem, not MINE. If your family etc truly loves you, they will WANT you to be happy, and they will learn to accept your choices. They may not agree with them, but so what! Do YOU agree w/ everything THEY do/say? Yet I bet you still love them, correct?
This was an old thread I made, I'm glad you bumped it up. Yeah, I do. I can't speak for everyone else, but even though I prefer to date/like women of other ethnicities, it doesn't mean that I'm dogging down my own/hate my own. I think my mom is too sensitive about it. I still love my parents, I just won't restrict my choices only to women who look like myself. Yeah, I'll live my life and I know what I want/like/respond to on my own terms. Even with some of the posts on here, that's the kind of thinking that I have. My life isn't run based on what someone else thinks, regardless if the person is through an online forum, or in person. At the same time, I'll try to make sure that I'm not spreading arrogance or ignorance.
i was blessed with color-tolerant parents. even tho i'm 19, legally can date whomever i want, and i know my parents know that, i still wanted to ask them for their blessing before i agreed to date mike. they were not concerned about his color--but if they were, and had nothing else against him, i'd date him against their wishes. Praise God none of my friends' and family's reaction has been negative so far. my IR is merely a novelty. only response was a little awkward: that short dialogue in my signature took place between me and a 2nd cousin on facebook chat. i can expect more responses like that as family who live in the deep South bring up the subject of my WW/BM relationship. but the people who matter don't care that mike is as dark as i am light. they just want me to be happy, careful, and to follow God's will.
Hey heres a better question why do the most prestigious and high budget universties tend to have a majority of WHITE STUDENTS AND PROFESSORS OR FOREIGN STUDENTS LIKE UCLA WITH ALL THE ASIANS THERE. Answer that question and you will have answered the question about why there are HBCUS!
