I notice a trend in my part of the country in which a network of schools that are promoting boxing, kickboxing and MMA as the complete package is challenging traditional martial arts schools. Anyone here is seeing the same thing? What I'm surprised of is the number of women in these schools.

I agree there are more MMA schools that are appearing to be more of a overall combination of different styles that traditional schools there are more women in these school and that's great. I'm in Krav maga school and one of my partners is a girl from the slovakia. she is pretty and nice but can knock a person out!

The old Tae Kwon-Do dojang I used to run with, has jiu-jitsu classes and cross trains with a guy by the name of Mike Morningstar. MMA is nothing new to the world of Martial Arts tho. Bruce Lee was a proponent of adapting to fighters and not limiting yourself to a traditional 'style,' or set of moves. To me, it only seems that people are recognizing the benefits of this concept, from the popularity of the UFC and other MMA fight leagues. This guy was years ahead of Dana White and all that shit.

On another note, Tiger Schulmann Karate, has now changed their name to Tiger Schulmann MMA. Everyone's jumping on the bandwagon now.

    :p

late edit - This one is to Jarell. Don't slack on the females, lol. I remember starting out my first class, practicing against a blue-belt, who kicked like a mule. Here I am, all big and strong, literally SHOCKED at how much power she generated with a low snap-kick. Plus those TKD studios are like daycare centers, and you come into contact with young moms and older sisters, of students there.

MMA as we know it today is pretty much something that White Boys can excel in. If you notice there aren't any prominent white boys dominating in boxing.

But if you want to get technical, Mixed Martial Arts have always been around. Taekwondo is a "Mixed Martial Art". Kyokushinkai is a "Mixed Martial Art". Choy Li Fut is a "Mixed Martial Art" and so forth.

I have read an article recently that women love mixed martial arts. They flock to those events. They love the raw ferocity and power of the art. I will try to find that article and post it here. Also, I will try to find the opening fight scene of Enter The Dragon. The Late Bruce Lee demonstrated mixed martial arts in it's pure art form in that opening scene. He was indeed ahead of his time. I wish the MMA world would recognize him as the Father of modern Mixed Martial Arts. Jim Arvanitis of Pankration would argue for the title.

Say what? I guess you never heard of the Klitsckhos, Marco Huck, Robert Stieglitz, Carl Froch, or Joe Calzaghe just to name a few? It's just because they aren't form the US is the reason u don't really hear about them. But all those guys are current or former Champs and some undefeated. If u look at the current champs list it is about 45% white. With MMA, it is the closing thing to reality combat but u better know how to grapple white, black, or latino. No need to be a hater.

Like I said before u better know how to grapple. Anybody see Toney get embarrassed on Sat. night by Couture. That ass whoppin was quick.

Toney looked like complete ass after all that shit talking he's been doing for months.

everyone said Toney had a boxers chance, and he did as anyone else would have. I've seen shitty fighters that had corny boxing that KOd fight favorites before, in the UFC. But Randy, as old as he is, has a ton of experience. When you put someone as nonathletic as Toney, into the ring with an adept wrestler/grappler, you're asking for trouble. Toney looked just like Kimbo, to be quite honest. Personally, the fight was very one-sided and I don't think it was the least bit fair, lol.

Toney's been training MMA for about 9 months. Randy's been doing it for years, and wrestling for decades.

Funny thing is I've seen fighters knock out grapplers but never as experienced as Corture.

Toney is a fighter, but he's a sloppy 240lbs with no MMA ability. Randy does Muay Thai, boxed in the Army, and wrestled since god-knows-when. Personally I would have preferred it if they got a professional boxer, who was younger and more athletic. Someone quick enough to keep randy guessing, and not just stand there like a pile of shit, lol.

That fight was damn-near fixed, imo.

Very true. I've said it before a lot of those dudes wouldn't be able to take a good Mike Tyson but unfortunately boxers are usually too dumb to learn some ground fighting.

if you put someone like Mike Tyson back in his prime, in the ring with Couture...

now that would be something worth seeing....

Toney had no unpredictability about him...even someone without formal grappling training, could do a single leg on him. Randy knew what he was doing. He knows he's too old to be exchanging punches.

once you get to the ground tho, all that boxing shit goes out the window lol

That shit is no joke but you can't tell that to a dumb shit talker. You thought people would have learned from Kimbo's failed attempts. He fought lame niggas from the hood and thought he was a fighter. Dudes don't get it. Doing pull ups and pushups may get you cut but it don't make you a fighter.

Normally I'd agree, but Toney was TOO cocky... TOO mouthy going into the fight. I'm glad Randy took him out like he did... I was actually hoping to see Randy drill him from a full mount for a couple of minutes. Would have been much more gratifying to see a KO. Couture took Toney to the ground with ease and once he had him there Toney had no clue how to defend.

i was actually hoping for a decent fight, much like I was hoping for Kimbo

    lol

Two loud-mouth thugs that got schooled by real fighters.

I was actually pulling for Kimbo, mainly He we train at the same gym. I know he gets a pretty bad rep, but he's really personable in person. He was training daily for that fight too.... at the very least, it would have been nice to see him perform better. After a while it just seemed as though he'd completely lost his will.

I wish there was a studio like A-T-T around me, but all we have is BJJ and TKD schools. The few MMA schools that seem like the real deal are all in the Center City area.
