Online rudeness vs cloying conformism

Discussion in 'Conversations Between White Women and Black Men' started by Jaybee in WWBM, Jan 3, 2010.

  1. Ahhh, but this is false. Merriam Webster's online dictionary defines a customer as, "One who purchases a commodity or a service". The deformation of language, my friend, is yet another one of those slippery slopes, as we discussed earlier, to perdition. One far slipperier for authority figures than common folk, across history.

On this we can agree wholeheartedly (shock, horror!). One last thing Webby; are emails sent to webmaster@whit... etc address initially received by anyone other than yourself?

  2. webmaster's opinion is clear and fair to me. I lol at the idea that I have been labeled a "cuckold" for daring to share the details of one experience with a girl years ago.

I maintain that there is far too much 'leaping to conclusions' on this board but I like most of the posters on this board (even some of the ones that have spewed vitriol at me) so I'll stick around and contribute where I can. :D

Nope. No one has access to that email address except our almighty Webmaster.

  7. Thanks, yet another box ticked in the 'To Do' list.

Now for you. You got into a very theoretical discussion earlier with E-Spy, something about wanting to change, but neither of you actually got specific. I'll entertain the notion. What change(s) do you want to see?

I figured you'd key in on the literal definition. In life, terms are expanded or redefined all the time outside of their literal meaning. It does not always lead to perdition, sometimes it leads to innovation.

Here's an example pertaining to non-paying customers:

A guy walks into a bar and starts harassing women. The bar owner says, "Stop harassing my customers." The guy responds, "These women aren't customers, the sign outside clearly says, 'Free admission and drinks for Ladies'". Yet, most bar owners would still label and treat those women the same as their paying customers.

This business model (sometimes referred to as "Freemium") is even more pervasive online, e.g. Facebook, Google, MySpace, Match.com, Twitter, etc.

WWBM is more in line with Wikipedia's take on "customer":

"... the term customer also includes by extension anyone who uses or experiences the services of another. A customer may also be a viewer of the product or service that is being sold despite deciding to not buy them."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customer

    ------------------------------

Harvard Business Review: What Is a Free Customer Worth?

"Customers who pay little or nothing and are subsidized by another set of customers are essential to a vast array of businesses, including shopping malls, real estate brokerages, information technology providers, auction houses, print and online media, and employment and dating services.

According to one estimate, this business model accounts for a majority of the revenues of 60 of the world’s 100 largest companies. With the explosion in the number of free services offered on the internet, the prevalence of so-called two-sided markets is likely to grow."

Its fear of difference. even those who say they are against intolerance are intolerant of anything they are afraid of, new ideas, individual thinkers, free thinkers, rebels . the masses are afraid of people swimming against the grain, it scares them for what reason, i am not sure but fear is a powerful thing--think Nazi Germany, think High School, think Fahrenheit 451

To quote The Much Regretted FRANK ZAPPA, in his 1992/3 autobio:

Why should you be deemed wrong just because a mere THREE MILLION PEOPLE think you are?

why should be deemed wrong by 34 million people who dont know you, dont pay your bills.

  15. What others call "fluidity" of language, I call bastardisation - and friend, there's a reason your mortgage is an extremely carefully worded written contract with you. When it comes to money, words, official and otherwise, need to be chosen very astutely. I practice precision as a matter of principle. Yeah, you're damn right I'll call you up on the ONLY correct definition - which you have now been given.

The bar owner is used to dealing with drunks - not a good example. And I'd say, "Until these women actually PAY for a drink, they're your patrons, not your customers, asshole", before heading off to a decent establishment.

It has to be. For any online venture to succeed, click counts have to reach huge numbers before credit cards get slid out of wallets, especially when selling intangibles, as is the case with you. You can't get these numbers unless you have an absolute or near monopoly, or you have an utterly unique selling point. So you need to achieve thousands, or tens of thousands of regulars. These, of whom I'm one, are better termed "Target market".

A yes, Wiki, the 'Fox News' of online encylopaediae.

Interesting. Reminds me of the hotel I stayed at in New Orleans, from 5-7 they served FREE drinks - certain wines, spirits and beers were free, free, free. For a Brit, coming from a nation where there's never a freebie, that's an amazing business model to enjoy, much less to witness. But it works; you're gonna lose a couple of hundred to cheapskates and clever dodgers like me, but you'll retain half your patrons and convert them into customers, thus not only making back your money, but ensuring the bar is always humming - empty bars deter happy drinkers.

He who owns the domain & the hosting account is god. Be we customers or be we squatters, we obey by his rules, however he choses to word or interpret or change them, or we go elsewhere.

It's the internet. It's not new.

  17. Correct. God does indeed own this domain, the account, the ISP, the posters, the computers they use, the networks that connect them, the hardware that runs those networks, the electricity that runs them, the water flow that creates the electricity, the water itself, and all life on Earth that is nourished by it.

You are also correct that you either obey His word, or you very definitely go elsewhere, dear.

It is compared to the Earth, as is Man himself.
