I think many hip-hop artists did the same thing you did: rifle through Mom's and Pop's vinyl to find good grooves.

Chuck Berry was perhaps the most fundamental progenitor of the Beatles' sound. They recorded covers of "Roll Over Beethoven" and "Rock And Roll Music" early on and many other Berry classics were in their live repertoire. Chuck Berry's influence is also heard (in altered form) on later recordings such as "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey" (1968) and "Come Together" (1969) (when "Come Together" was released, the owner of Chuck Berry's copyrights sued John Lennon for copyright infringement of his song "You Can't Catch Me", after which the two reached an amicable settlement, the terms of which included an agreement that Lennon cover some Chuck Berry songs as a solo artist).

it's hard to come up with only four, but it depends on my mood at the time. But here it goes:

Fishbone- A truly original funk, metal, ska band from Los Angeles who don't receive the props they deserve.

Prince- What can you say, this man did things his own way and was always on point musically and lyrically.

Funkadlic- Way ahead of their time and influenced so many groups and singers.

Curtis Mayfield- See the soundtrack for Super Fly.

Absolutely he was. The Beatles have always been very open about their early influences, especially Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. I was just at a loss because it was a thread about bands. I'm pretty sure that there isn't one person out there who doesn't know at least 1 Beatles song. :)

I'm assuming this is more on the lines of an actual band and not a just a singing group? If so then mine would be:

    Earth, Wind, & Fire
    Chicago
    Parliament Funkadelic
    The Commodores
    Sly & The Family Stone

    4. Prince and the Revolution
    3. The Rolling Stones
    2. Black Sabbath
    1. Led Zeppelin

Prince is quite popular on this thread.

Prince is the most talented musician that I've ever seen. Dance like James Brown, play guitar like Hendrix, and write a melody like Bob Dylan.

Props to all the Prince fans.
