Do we have a quotes thread anywhere? Oh well. I'm starting one! Add your favorite quotes. I've got tons, but this thread was spurned by a book I'm presently reading. Night Watch by Sarah Waters. I've been reading it on and off for a long time...haven't gotten into it to the point where I'm gobbling it up just yet, but it's an interesting read. One of the characters said something that I just read that I really liked, concerning grief. She'd just been discussing carrying cots during WWII in England (The book is set in the years following the war). "It's no more than happened to thousands of us. Who didn't lose someone or something? I could walk on any street in London, stretch out my arm, touch a woman or a man who lost a lover, a child, a friend. But I - I can't get over it, Mickey. I can't get over it. " She laughed, unhappily. "Get over it. What a funny phrase that is! As if grief is a fallen house, and one has to pick one's way over the rubble to the ground on the other side...I've got lost in my rubble, Mickey, and I can't seem to find my way across it. I don't think I want to cross it, that's the thing. The rubble has all my life in it still " I found it a very eloquent statement on grief.
Because Nietszche is so good for quotes. "Once upon a time, in some out of the way corner of that universe which is dispersed into numberless twinkling solar systems, there was a star upon which clever beasts invented knowing. That was the most arrogant and mendacious minute of "world history,” but nevertheless, it was only a minute. After nature had drawn a few breaths, the star cooled and congealed, and the clever beasts had to die." He sums up the entirety of human existence, including our future, within the space of a paragraph. Brilliant.

"I got a letter from the gov't the other day. I opened, and read it, and said they were suckas. They wanted me for their army or whatever. Picture me givin' a damn. I said never"-Chuck D
