Don't you think Rodman deserve to be in the Hall of Fame?..Take away his antics, he was a great defensive player.I really believed, if he kept his shit together..he would have won another ring by now (no disrespect, but MJ wouldn't have gotten his last 3 if it weren't for Rodman). He never got the respect he deserve...No Olympic Dream team selection, etc. I would like him to get some recogniton b4 he dies.
You can't act like an asshole and not expected to be treated like an asshole. Rodman was his own biggest obstacle and problem. I doubt that voters would offer him enough votes. From a personal standpoint, I don't believe he had a hall of fame career. He played his role...and VERY well I might add, but not to the status worthy of being called a hall of famer. I often hear people say that someone should be on an all-star team of various sorts and my question is always the same. If your guy made it, who should not have made it. In this case, pick a dream team when Rodman was relevant and tell me who should not have been on it. Also, you have to factor in someone's 'antics' when you wanna qualify 'greatness' such as hall of fame status. Lastly, none of the Bulls would have won their last three rings without the return of Michael Jordan. It is a team sport...the sum usually equals it's parts. That means, there were many compnoents that made the Bulls champs...but, don't get it fucked up...Mike was the straw that stirred the drink. He made it all come together on the court. Good topic Shion. I hope more people offer their thoughts. The words above are merely the thoughts and opinions EQ and to quote Dennis Miller : 'That's just my opinion, I could be wrong !'
Hmm... I NEVER watch that show with that comboverdoushe - Trumph. But I did when I heard DR would be on.. At first I thought it was entertaining as hell, but pretty quickly did my laugh got stuck in my throat..... I co-sign the above post.. I truly hope he gets his shit together,, but the hall of fame opportunity has sailed......................... I think there are more urgent questions to be answered about DR......
no, rodman should not be in the hall of fame...yes, he was a great player...no one can take away the fanfare of his early rise to fame in basketball...the man is a runaway train wreck still to this day...i would love to be able to say that fame and fortune went to his head and he went crazy for a few years and he is now worthy for his iconic contribution to basketball...if anything he has a place in history...he had more than 15 minutes of fame but he like an "anna nicole smith" will more than likely die a tragic death due to his minute by minute throw caution to the wind lifestyle... it would be great to see him get his act together...but i'm not holding my breath...there are many others more worthy of this honor!
Should someone's personal life hinder their professional recognition? Yeah, he's a weirdo, but has he done something so heinous that it should negate a bid for Hall of Fame?
His career does not warrant Hall of Fame induction. The fact that he's an asshole only makes it more difficult for him. The human element ( the voters ) has to come into play. He had a great career...not a HOF career.
The "Contributor" section in the link below states that a "significant contribution" to the game is necessary to be nominated to the HOF. Tough to define, but what is and what is not "significant" shall be determined by the BHOF, its Screening Committee(s) or Honors Committee(s). I would be willing to bet that none of them have an overall positive view of Rodman and his antics, people tend to hold grudges and have biases. http://www.hoophall.com/ot/bhof-enshrinement.html
If I were a voter, I'd put a check next to his name. While Hall of Fame credentials are usually thought of in terms of offense, there are many Hall of Fame players who's name comes to mind when one solely thinks of defense. And Rodman certainly qualifies as an exceptional defensive player. The guy lead the league or was in the top 5 in rebounds for many years throughout his career. His defensive skills were such that he could shut down many of the opposing teams best players no matter the position. Point guard to center, Rodman had it covered. In generations passed, many players are lauded for their "trash talk". It's not just bragging. Trash talk is designed to get in the other player's head and prevent him from playing his game effectively. Dennis Rodman isn't the first player that would come to mind but I'd argue that he should be in the top 5. How else can you explain his ability to effectively guard a player like Shaquille Oneal who was 4 to 5 inches taller and had between 50 to 60 pounds in weight advantage? Also, unlike Ron Artest, Dennis Rodman rarely if ever completely imploded when a playoff series or championship was on the line. In fact, he more often than not rose to the occasion by making baskets though he was rarely an offensive threat, steals, blocks and other miscellaneous plays that don't necessarily register on the stat sheet. While the same can be said of someone like Robert Horry (Big Shot Rob what they call him!) who I'd argue against as a potential inductee, I'm one who has no qualms about saying Rodman is a Hall of Fame player.
I'm sure he was paid alot of money to act like that on that show....that's what the public wants to see, no? They want to see Dennis Rodman acting like Dennis Rodman.
I couldn't agee with you more, NPM. Regardless of whether or not you like Rodman off the court, you can't deny him the accomplishments that he made on the court. He has 5 NBA rings, 2 Defensive Player of the Year awards, 7 All-Defensive First Team honors; and he lead the NBA in rebounds per game for a record breaking 7 consecutive seasons. In my opinion, those honors are worthy of Hall of Fame recognition. Granted, Rodman was never the star of any of the teams that he was on. He did all the little behind the scenes type things that are required to win games. He was very content to play defense; but as you pointed out, he would step his game up and play offense if it was needed. I witnessed that numerous times with the Bulls alone. He would get the team out of the shooting slump they were in; and then when the others picked up scoring, he would go back to his defensive roll. I'm a firm believe in the fact that 'offense gets the glory, but defense wins the game.' If he is denied the Hall of Fame recognition, it will be because of his off court antics and not because he didn't earn it on the court. Just a side note on Robert Horry and the comparison there. I wouldn't argue for him either. With the exception of winning more NBA championships, he is in no way had the career that Rodman has had. Plus, as far as I know, Rodman never ran up in the crowd and hit a fan for heckling him on the court like Horry did when he was playing for the Rockets. I don't recall Rodman ever having an altercation with a fan during a game. If I'm wrong about that, I would appreciate it if someone would correct me. Great post, Newpowermoves. :smt023
And you know your basketball really well, probably more than I do? You really are the total-package aren't you?
I think he belongs in the Hall (off-court antics notwithstanding) because of his uncanny knack for getting, and highlighting the importance of -- rebounds. Plus he has a handful of championship rings. "Rodman earned NBA All-Defensive First Team honors seven times and was voted NBA Defensive Player of the Year twice. He also led the NBA in rebounds per game for a record seven consecutive years and won five NBA championships (1989, 1990, 1996, 1997, 1998)." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Rodman
Tony, I can sip a glass of wine at the spa with the girls while getting a fresh new pedi, or I can high-five with the guys watching the game. I'm surprised that you didn't know that by now.
