I got a look at this movie recently and think this is bada$$. Taken's not bad... I think we covered this before (black folk just keep rehashing the same stuff lol), but it's definitely worth checking out.. my coworkers kept talking about Liam Neelson's performance and bravado, and finally hyped it up enough, for me to check it out.. dude was no joke, son lol He's like DeNiro's character from 'Meet the Parents,' CIA and all... ..with the kiddie gloves pulled off
yeah, I wanted to see this as well..makes you wonder how Harrison Ford pass this one up and did that Indiana retread instead.
Damn, son.. For those of you who need some references for GOOD Harrison Ford 'techno-thrillers' (based off material from Tom Clancy), check out 'Patriot Games' and 'Clear and Present Danger.' He plays a more serious role as CIA op Jack Ryan, and I guess that was why the people behind Taken, pitched him a script. I may need to look for those movies and watch them..they're pretty good... Patrick Bergen is in Patriot Games as well (if I remember correctly), another good actor.
Saw the movie today. It was okay. A solid 7 out of 10. But seriously this stuff has been done too much before and better. I even liked the flawed "Man On Fire" better than this even despite the former's shaky camerawork. First of all Laim was splendid. But this was cliché city. I knew everything that was going to happen. Liam's character having to display his considerable skills before his daughter is kidnapped? Check. He has an ex-wife? Oh, then she must be some bitch who comes across as selfish because she tired of him being away from home. Check. And she has a new husband? Well, he must be some dude who is seen as being the "cooler" dad because he gives the daughters all sorts of material things and freedom. But he isn't as truly substantial as the lead character who is more morally grounded and provides the daughter with priceless advice about life. Check. But I will say they made the stepdad less of a one dimensional asshole. Liam's character is a father who must always be right and his fears must always be founded so we can see him as the wise dad that everyone should want in their lives as well as feel sympathetic towards him as others (mostly women) don't treat him as well as he should be? Check. Another typical male writer’s fantasy about the cool dad that can do no wrong. The best friend of Liam's daughter will wind up dead to better display how serious the stakes really are? Check. Liam's character takes out like half an army by himself? Check. Many bullets are shot in his direction but the only bullets that connect are the ones that are fired from Liam's gun? Check. Target practice is obviously a lost art for non Americans. The foreign "good guys" turn out to be incompetent or compromised while Liam's character is honest and deep down wholesome as American pie? You betcha. Check. Worst of all I saw the final scene coming. I was hoping they wouldn't do the whole wannabe-girl-singer-meets-her-idol-and-takes-first-step-towards-a-career nonsense. But sure enough they did. Frankly after what the daughter had gone through it was almost tacky to bring up again her desire for a singing career and a superficial life. Unless there was a way to prove growth in Liam's character as a result that scene simply didn't have any meaning. But this is Hollywood. And in Hollywood films its just not enough to show a pretty girl who lives in a mansion with her rich step daddy and rescued from overseas by her super agent dad. No, we have to show that fame and fortune, the American dream, are coming her way too. What a superficial nation we are, Entertaining flick that would is probably best viewed with a huge audience. But outside the scene in which Liam's character tells his daughter how to respond to the approach of the kidnappers there is not one scene from the film that I will remember in a week. And the mentioned scene involving the phone conversation between dad and terrified daughter? That was shown in the fucking trailer.
