Bullshit, when sasha made a blanket statement about black men and I called her out. This post is a simple question. There is nothing rude and aggressive about sasha posts. Look at you..just showing off your calculus wisdom..now you got me up for the challenge........I saw this stuff back in my first year of engineering school

-first you derive an equation of motion by taking the first intergral of the
acceleration constant plus the position constant......this gives you
s = -16t^2+1000, 0<t<7.905 ....therefore if just drop the object from
1000 ft. up.....it hits the ground at exactly 7.9 seconds later !

 

Look at the brains over here, and I'm not being sarcastic either . Science and math were/are not my strongest points lol

s=-16T^2+1000=0
-16T^2=1000/16= 62.5
T= 62.5^(1/2)= 7.9

I would do it this way:

After the appropriate integration you should find you get to this equation. This can be found in any physics book by the way.

S(t)=ut+(1/2)at^2 (1)

where u is the initial velocity, which in this case is 0
t is the time.
a is the acceleration given as 32 ft/sec^2

Well, using the above equation(1), and substituting the values given I get:

S(t) = 0*t +1/2*32*t^2 which when simplified becomes
S(t) = 0 + 16t^2
S(t) = 16t^2 (2)

That’s it….

Question doesn’t ask how long it takes for the object to hit the ground…
But if it did, you would just substitute the 1000ft into equation (2)and get

1000 =16t^2
Therefore t = (1000/16)^1/2 = 7.91…seconds

On a side note:Archman I think your equation actually calculates the height above the ground the object is at a given time,not the distance the object has travelled(what the question asks); so its wrong, for this particular question.
