perceptions of Italian-Americans

Shawty, what's the general perception of Italian-Americans in Italy? Are they more American culture wise. a li' too American for the older generations of Italians?

I had a colleague, who's Italian, said there was a rift with Scillians and other Italians..Scillians were like the "black sheep" of the family.

I was trying my best to get to Italy before I left the military but didn't make it

first of all it's Sicilian and not Scillians . Sicilian from Sicily (Sicilia in italian).
I don't know much about italians who live abroad actually. We don't have a precise way of thinking about Italian-American, besides that they r doing better then us for sure (italy sucks now!).
About the black sheep thing, it's a bit difficult to explain. Sicily is an island an in the history they always tended to be indipendent from the rest of Italy. at the same moment the south of Italy (not only Sicily) depends a lot from the north, because the north have industries and it's way richer. so the taxes that the north pays r redistributed and go to the south too, even though the south pays less taxes because of the lack of occupation and industries. The problem is that some ppl from the north are a bit tired of paying for ppl in the south. The south actually don't have money and hasn't been developed right in the past, but even if they had money, they have a different mentality about efforts, jobs etc.
also, most of Sicilians think that they r the best. Wherever they go they say that everything sucks because it's not Sicilian. this attitude is not good. then, in Sicily most of things are controlled by mafia and most of ppl don't seem to want a change. same thing in the rest of the south, especially in the Naples area and some others.
There r so many difference in culture and attitudes that sometimes make the north and the south crash, and Sicily is just the main example of that.

Damn I always write so much but it's difficult to explain to ppl who don't know the environment etc.

Everyone has problems, Alaska and Hawaii aren't geographically attached to the U.S. so that same attitude of .."us against them " is prevalent in some areas.

I was in the Air Force.We have a base in Italy...Aviano.Lord knows, I wanted to go there.

 

One more thing Shawty, you'll have to forgive my juvenile questions but I always felt I was missing out on something not traveling more when I had the opportunity.

Duh, I live 7 km from Aviano! So as u can imagine I see a lot of guys from the base etc. Most of the military guys I met r crazy/alcoholic/mental/BASTARDS, lol. I know it's not nice to say that, probably in a normal environment they would be great guys, but the fact that they r far and that they move often make them think "Who cares, I'm just gonna fuck her". But I found one who is very special (my favourite staff sergeant ever :smt054) and hope it will work between us, even though he has made me mad too.
There are a lot of italian women who fall in love with american guys and they get hurt. sometimes he doesn't wanna stay here, sometimes she doesn't want to follow him etc, but a lot of times they break up before he has to leave because cultural differences r so HUGE, or he ends up being married. plus, u've got to marry a man from the military if u want to follow him and some ppl don't feel like marrying. A lot of girls that I met r like "an american? never again, ESPECIALLY A BLACK ONE".
It's the same thing I was thinking about. Then this friend of mine introduced me Rod without asking me, so it was unexpected... and we liked each other. But I tell u, if things don't work with him neither, i'm gonna delete americans from my list. too much mess and sufference.

Yeah, I understand what you're saying....Miliatry tend to be the biggest players cause that what we do....we're not staying for long time so there's nothing better to do than drink and fuck..at least that the mentality of a lot.
Being overseas is fantasy to a lot of us...that's why we refer to going back home (u.s.a.) as the "Real World".

I think a lot of foreign women have preconcieved notions about American life from the movies so they imagine a very prosperous, lifestyle but when they get here..they realized that the military life pays very little $$$ and you'll have to work just as hard here as you did back home...not including adjusting to a new culture.
The younger you are ,early teens and twentys, I believed you're more willing to adjust to a new lifestyle..you're open to new ideas....

...but in your late 20's and beyond, you're pretty grounded in who you are and you don't have the energy to learn a totally different lifestyle. You have a stable life, job, family...so you probably don't want to risk losing that over a marriage that would possible felled at the end.

Blacks tend to let their hair down when their overseas, there's not that apprehension of racism or the overtones of discrimination as there are back in the states.We feel we're treated as equals with our white counterparts...yes racism exists everywhere..I see how Africans are treated in Europe, the riots in Paris, futbol matches, HIV stigma...so I pay attention.
Also the novelty of being a black American considering hip-hop's influence does gives us an edge.

However, once you get back to the stats, you gotta put your "gameface" on or rather it automatically forms...and I don't think a lot of foreign women are ready for that "association" or stigma when they marry a black person.JMHO

hope things work out for you,appreciate the fact that you gave us a chance..not everyone ventures out of their comfort zone.

AC and heating, staff sergeant. i'd define him only a HALF BOYFRIEND -that makes me only half taken!- lol.
