Your problem, jamal, is that with your "education" in films and movies you've developed this "high horse" mentality. You think that if a film doesnt explore the depths of human emotion and conflict, its a bad movie and anything thats not an indie is garbage. (How can you fairly judge the quality of today's major releases if you only see 5 or 6 big titles a year?) Here are a few tips for you... Stop with the name-dropping. It makes you look like a ----. (You can fill in the blank.) And loosen the f*ck up. Just because you went to film school, that doesnt make you ben stiller.
(Thanks for the compliment, smooth. I respect your opinion, and coming from you that means alot.) I hear you as far as how people may view us based on a tv show. But thats just it! If someone is ignorant enough to base their ideas and views of an entire race on a sit-com...how dumb and simple can they be? When I see jim carey and pamela anderson on tv, i dont think all canadian men and women are physical comedians and big-titty wh*res. And when I watch the sopranos I dont think all tri-state area italians are mobbed up. So anyone who develops their image of all black people from "house of pain" (why not the "cosby show?"), you tell those racist pr*cks to kiss your *ss...two times!
Jellybird, I'm just providing some solid facts. You see your problem is you made a few claims and statements that weren't true. Don't get on me for challenging them or at least disagreeing with them. I will not apologize for having an education (are you the type who calls black folks white for having an education? If not stop being so damn intimidated about it already). And I will certainly not apologize for engaging in a debate in which I had enough education and understanding about the business to have a clue concerning what the hell I was talking about. If you can't handle such a back-n-forth with someone who will use actual knowledge to refute any erroneous claim you make then I suggest you just stay out of the discussion altogether. And just so you know, fella, name dropping only occurs when the person being accused of it makes references to famous people he knows personally or has spoken to. It does not however represent when a person like myself passes along info about well known figures from sources EVERYONE is privy to (its called the internet; its called Hollywood journals and magazines). Saying that Bill Duke took over the Communications School at my former university isn't name dropping considering I never met the man and was not at the school when he took the job. But he came with a great reputation and he earned the respect of many folks from what I have read and have been told. So the next time you try dropping that charge at least have an understanding of what the charge actually means. Let me also point out that I wrote that I see 5 or 6 of the big mindless flicks each year (you, knowm stuff like Transformers). Nonetheless not every major studio release is some dumbass action flick you know. A few are great dramas, entertaining comedies and well crafted adventure stories (The Dark Knight definitely qualifies in that last category as does Iron Man). So I see a few of those along with about a half dozen of the ones that are more predictable and devoid of plot or characterization (its typical to catch more bad films than good ones when you pay for Hollywood flicks because most mainstream movies aren't very good). Now when you include those slections I just mentioned and all the non-studio and foreign films I catch each year I do see quite a diverse selection of motion pictures. So instead of posing the question at me and asking how can I judge let me pose the question at you. How diverse is your filmviewing? I saw "Tropic Thunder" and liked it. I liked "Traitor" too. Next on myn list is the small budget indie "Fronzen River". What's on your to-watch list? Which of is us actually more open-minded to different films and which of is actually more limiting in our selections? I may be on a "high horse" but I have quite a broad selection of films that I catch each year so anytime you want to compare we can do that. And in my relatively small collection of purchased DVDs I have films such as the Star Wars series (original trilogy), Conan, the Terminator movies, the Alien franchise, the Indiana Jones series, Training Day, Inside Man, I Am Legend, Jaws, Matrix, Pulp Fiction, Species, Die Hard, Silverado, etc. Last time I checked none of those films are trying to explore the depth of human emotion. They are simply trying to entertain. And I have no problem with that as long as they are done well. Empire Strikes Back and The Terminator are probably both in my top five all time favorites. A film doesn't have to be emotionally sophisticated or intellectually superior for me; it just needs to be well made and have an engaging story to tell. And most of the flicks I just listed (even Training Day) are well-made or exceptional. The lone exception is probably Species, but, hey its a guilty pleasure. The chick in it is hot.
Yeah, the new spike lee movie looks interesting. And i cannot stand Tyler Perry,at all.His "Diary of a mad Black woman" movies are corny to me. This guy is probably the richest Black film maker, and he dosent utilize his talent and power to make BLack films,or films in general that ae actually GOOD. Ive also noticed,as some of you have, that he loves to cast dark skinned black men as villians,or the "problem".
Oprah also said she has fifty and Kanye on her Ipod and one of the songs she likes most is up in the club. Go figure. I still love me some Oprah though she is a smart business woman and Tyler if the man say he is straight I will give him the benefit of the doubt,His movie daddy's girls portrays black men in a positive light even though most of his stuff is geared towards the ladies. I am just glad a brother is making it without have to sling drugs.
