DC Announces Tales From Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee

DC Comics is marking the 100th birthday of Stan Lee, once their biggest rival, with Tales from Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee, a one-shot comic collecting new stories based on Lee’s re-imagined DC characters.

In 2001-2002, Lee collaborated with DC creators on a series of one-shots, Just Imagine, that presented alternate versions of classic DC characters. Tales from Earth-6 will be a 96-page, prestige-format comic collecting 10 new stories about the Just Imagine characters.

Tales from Earth-6 will be released on December 27, 2022, with a wraparound main cover.

 

The Rings of Power Renews Interest in J.R.R. Tolkien


Amazon's "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" debuted earlier this month and brought fantasy author Tolkien back to the best sellers list. Tolkien's "The Silmarillion," a collection of works that set the stage for the world of Middle-earth, returns to the list at No. 89. His seminal works "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" return as a boxed set at No. 150.

The Amazon series is based on a small amount of material written by Tolkien that describes Middle-earth's "Second Age." The "Third Age" is the time period we saw in the "Rings" and "Hobbit" films and books, and the "First Age" is covered extensively in the author's encyclopedia-like "Silmarillion."

This period in Middle-earth, some 4,000 years before "The Hobbit," includes the forging of the rings of power – from which the series gets its name and that film fans remember was explained in voice-over at the beginning of "The Fellowship of the Ring."

 

REPORT: Comcast Wants to Buy Warner Bros. Discovery, Merge With NBCUniversal



Despite the ink still drying on the merger of Warner Bros. and Discovery, the newly minted conglomerate may soon be taken over by another media giant.

In a breakdown of the financial struggles Warner Bros. Discovery is currently facing by The Hollywood Reporter, an interesting piece of information emerged: Comcast has its eye on acquiring the struggling company and merging it with NBCUniversal. While the unification of Warner Bros. with Discovery seemed to be a beneficial one for all involved, things have quickly gone south. From the cancellation of Batgirl and Scoob: Holiday Haunt to the purging of numerous films and shows on HBO Max to massive layoffs, Warner Bros. Discovery's birth was quickly met with bad press and a legion of angered creatives. The highly publicized moves by new CEO David Zaslav saw WBD's stock plummet, and that's reportedly what has so enticed Comcast.

Per THR, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts is eagerly awaiting April 2024, when the legal hurdles preventing the purchase of WBD will be out of the way. Of course, the merger of two massive media companies would still face numerous antitrust concerns, but it wouldn't be impossible for the companies to join together. "Obviously, Peacock sucks," said an unnamed executive familiar with both companies about NBCUniversal's current streaming service. "There are some good synergies. I'm sure [Roberts] is licking his chops because the [WBD] stock is so low. And I think that's Zaslav's endgame. Get the place sold."

Zaslav has indeed proved shrewd as the head of the new company, with every indication that Batgirl was ultimately shelved as a write-off. What's more, the HBO Max purge is reportedly saving the company millions, money that's sorely needed as it faces $50 million in debt.
"People feel like it's Comcast for sure," said another source. "It's going to be so depressing to lose another major studio [after Disney bought Fox]. And Warners was the Tiffany studio."

The coalescing of Disney and Fox saw similar cancellations and concerns about creative freedom moving forward, and the merger between two more powerful film and television studios would provide creators with even fewer options. But Warner Bros. Discovery insists a sale isn't its endgame. "We are building Warner Bros. Discovery for the long term," a spokesperson said.

Either way, the next two years will present plenty of challenges for the new company and its divisive CEO as they struggle to fix a tainted reputation, win back creatives, and turn DC Films into a viable rival to Marvel Studios.

 

Spectacular Spider-Man Season 1 Arriving On Disney+ in October




One of the most beloved Spider-Man properties is finally arriving on Disney+. Spectacular Spider-Man, which first premiered in 2008 on Kids WB, is often considered the best TV incarnation of the web-swinger of all time. Now, after premiering on Netflix earlier this year, Spectacular Spider-Man is making its way onto Disney+ this October.

The only catch? According to Decider, only the first season will be available. No reason was given as to why season 2 won’t be available, nor when Disney+ subscribers will get season 2. Along with Spectacular Spider-Man season 1, the short-lived MTV Spider-Man series that starred Neil Patrick Harris will also arrive on Disney+ simultaneously.

Spectacular Spider-Man hit a lot of bumps throughout its two-season run. After season 1, Marvel retained the TV rights to Spider-Man after Disney purchased the company in 2009. This led to season 2 airing on DisneyXD. Because Sony created the series, making a third season would’ve required the two companies to work several legal details out to make it, so Spectacular Spider-Man ended on a big cliffhanger.

Series creator Greg Weisman of Gargoyles fame had several storylines, TV movies, and characters planned out, including Spider-Man fighting more of his iconic villains such as Carnage, Mister Negative, Scorpion, Hydro-Man, Hobgoblin, and Morbius.

While we may never get a season 3 of this iconic series, having more places to view Spectacular Spider-Man is always a positive.

I just don’t get all the hate She-Hulk is receiving. It’s a very entertaining show. And, it doesn’t stray any further away from the source material than any other MCU property.

 

I haven't had time to watch it, but I couldn't help but notice Tweets and YouTube videos attacking it as feminist propaganda.

 

Everything now is literally labeled as feminist or "woke' propaganda if it's not centered around straight white dudes. Same tired butt hurt bullshit just another day.

 

Yeah word has lost all meaning. So overused. And what is more annoying most of these "Woke" Products are bad cause of the writing...casting a White Male in the Role would not make any difference in the quality unless your just a racist and/or sexist.

She hulk feels pretty inline with the comics quite frankly.

 

The show is in line with the comics plus all the people hating on the show & everything else that they label as feminist & woke aren't & probably never were fans of the original source material to begin with.

The internet is all about grievance. People spend far too much time complaining about things they don't like than they do about things they claim to like.

 

As an old-school She-Hulk reader, I can safely say the show is very close to the nature of the late 80s John Byrne comic and it is pretty fun to watch, however, there are several major issues with the way the show is adapted.

The show's decision to have the reason she can transfer in and out of Hulk form so easily because as a woman she has to deal with fear and anger every day. I'm sorry but that is stupid and needlessly gendered, it also implies that any marginalized person in society could be a Hulk. In the comics most Hulks can transfer into their Hulk form without going into a rage, Bruce can't because he is a unique hulk who developed a personality disorder because of childhood trauma.

I'm also not a fan of the show's playing fast and loose with old-school Marvel characters. They completely nerfed and farted on the corpses of The Wrecking Crew. Those dudes in the Comics are dangerous Avenger-level bad guys. This especially pissed me off because they are one of my favorite groups of Avengers villains. They also turned Mr. Immortal into a deadbeat, scumbag, who fakes his own death when he can't take being married anymore. In the comics, Mr. Immortal is a hero who has "died" countless times to save innocent people. There are plenty of D-level bad guys in Marvel, there really isn't a reason to dumb down cool villains and turn a hero into another one of the creepy men on the show.

Also, the show needs a proper villain, it seems they are going to drag out this Titania rivalry for the whole season, but in the meantime, She-Hulk hasn't fought anyone able to give her pause since her cousin in the first episode. A hero is only as badass as their villain.

The show is decent and I'm excited to have She-Hulk available to show up in future MCU projects, but the show isn't free from criticism.

 

The Wrecking Crew is & always have been B-level Thor villains. Whether it's been Thor or others characters (Captain America, Spider-Man & Iron First come top of mind) the Wrecking Crews M.O. has always been getting beaten then sent to prison then breaking out only to be quickly beaten again and sent right back to prison. Their being "Avengers Level" villains is only due to Baron Zemo recruiting them into his super villain army incarnation of the Masters of Evil where they achieved the only infamous thing they have ever done, beat Hercules nearly to death, and that was with the help of Mister Hyde and the Absorbing Man.

As for She-Hulk needing a proper villain, you do realize they are setting up the return (or rather the official MCU appearance) of the Leader right? That whole Intelligencia and trying to get her blood, that's straight Leader from the comics. Plus the fact they've revealed he's the villain for the Sam Wilson Captain America movie, all set up for that.

 

Yeah sure back in the day the Wrecking Crew were real threats...in Modern Times they are jobbers.

I do agree you could have simply had Jen not rely on Anger because she is more well adjusted. Or heck just say Anger or Rage is what motivates Hulk...but Jen is motivated by something else as her core emotion say Joy or something.

Well we don't know She Hulk will be in Captain America....

 

To be honest I haven't kept up with the last 10 years of Marvel Comics.

I like that the Wrecking Crew are just b-level villains, that's what makes them stand apart to me, they are common criminals with the power of Asgardian Gods (to a lesser degree) and they have fought every team in the Marvel Universe. They are tough and dangerous but they aren't silly muggers who look like a dollar-store boy band.

I know the MCU changes things up a bit from time to time but the fact that these guys.......

Making The Leader the "big bad" makes it even worse for me. She-Hulk isn't an espionage show, she isn't a strategic Captain America-type hero, she is a blunt object like her cousin, she needs something equally as blunt to fight. Whenever The Leader menaces Bruce he always provides a Hulk-level threat to wear him down (and give the comic reader some action to look at) What have we gotten so far in this show? A family squabble and two, 5 second long fights with Titania.
