Sarah Michelle Gellar Says She Would Cast Zendaya as Buffy For Any Possible Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed in a recent interview that she thinks Spider-Man: No Way Home actor Zendaya should play the slayer if a Buffy reboot ever sees the light of day. Gellar expressed her support for a reboot in an interview for Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts, adding the conclusion of the series left the door open for just that. When asked who she would choose as the new slayer, Gellar responded "I vote Zendaya." Julie Benz, who played Darla in both Buffy and Angel, agreed, saying "That would be amazing." Talk of a Buffy reboot has been circulating ever since the show concluded its seven-year run in 2003. Series creator Joss Whedon continued the series in comic book form in 2007 with a canonical series that lasted until 2018, when the reboot was launched set in present day. That hasn't stopped the talk of a live-action reboot, though, starting with a planned Buffy movie reboot that fell apart in 2010. A new Buffy TV series reboot was announced in 2018, but no announcements concerning its development have been made since then. Sarah Michelle Gellar has spoken about the prospect of a reboot in the past, saying she feels she's too old to be involved in it. Gellar argued that the monsters in the series "were a metaphor for the horrors of adolescence," and that she was "way too tired and cranky to put in that work again." However her former co-star, actor Anthony Head, expressed interest in being in the reboot as recently as 2020. Buffy series creator Joss Whedon has come under fire in recent years after actor Ray Fisher accused him of verbally abusive behavior on the set of Justice League in 2017. Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase on both Buffy and Angel, stood in solidarity with Ray Fisher and related her own experiences with Whedon's behavior on set. "Last summer, when Ray Fisher publicly accused Joss of abusive and unprofessional behavior toward the cast and crew during reshoots on the Justice League set in 2017, it gutted me," Carpenter said. "Joss has a history of being casually cruel. He has created hostile and toxic work environments since his early career. I know because I experienced it first-hand. Repeatedly." Since Fisher and Carpenter's accusations came to light, several different members of the Buffy and Angel cast have shown support for their castmate.
