He is married but the wife and kids are more about making him feel bad about banging her then they are relevant characters. They are basically on again off again. Honestly, I do like this newer breed of BM/WW that is popping up where the White Woman is aggressively going after the Black Man.
If the characters on a show are married and "thirsty" for or "banging" someone other than their spouses, they are a shitty representation of BM/WW IR and not worth any kind of praise. All that crap does is promote the negative stereotypes society puts on BM/WW IR as being based on something amoral and trashy. Celebrating that crap as though it's some kind of "win" for the BM/WW community when it's not is downright sad. It's bad enough that most IR porn is based on that garbage, so why the hell would so-called pro-IR folks want it overflowing like a backed up toilet into the mainstream media? It makes no damn sense to me.
Eh sure in the real world but in the tv world allowances have to be made for Drama. As for the specific cases in the Nevers you can probably get rid of his family and not change the plot. As for Evil, well her husband is a douche who is never around. I like seeing BM/WW IR on tv but I don't look to it for good representation like you mean. I am not a little kid watching say Black Panther.
You doing way too much here, we are talking about a TV show and it's not like that's the only representation of BM/WW in mainstream TV and movies. And sometimes things will be done for the sake of drama but for example the case of David and Kristen her husband has basically been neglecting her and the kids and she has falling in love with David. The key word is love not lust, part of the reason for that love is her admiration and respect for David which she herself has made clear.
Bad set up though. I be shocked if they went with them being together-together in season 2. Isn't she the star of the show as well?
Not excusing the actions of even fictional characters, but, with all due respect, I think your take on this is erroneous. This is arguably the most complicated relationship between a black male and white female (or a man and woman of any race) and one of the most beautifully handled of the sort that I have ever seen in Hollywood....even if it never turns out to be a full-blown romance because of their situations. And what makes it even more fascinating is, yes, how messy it can seem. All that happened in that last scene was the result of, for the most part, a splendid accumulation of setup for the entire season. David finally crosses the threshold and becomes a priest despite not being able to shake sexual desires. And it may have all worked out for him if it hadn't been for Kristen finally coming unglued after the murder she got away with and the second homicide she was on the verge of committing (all to protect her daughters from the worst of humanity). Spoiler But she stops herself and goes to David because he is the lone person she can talk to about this. And after asking if he is allowed to hear confessions and getting an affirmative answer she lets all of it loose, all she has been holding inside her for a season, all her deep secrets. And he is taken aback and scared for her and concerned for her. She is drowning in tears and he is on the verge of crying himself. But he gives her strength, ask her to truly repent, absolves her of her sins and tells her to look up and not be ashamed. She has spiritually exposed herself to him in a manner that led to an emotional nakedness on her part and he does not judge her but has figuratively lifted her up. And their hug goes on a little too long before they can no longer hold back the feelings they have had for each other for a long time. To compare it to porn, even if facetiously, is an overreaction. The handling of the two characters have displayed an immediate connection but the buildup was slow and steady and meticulously handled. And classy too. The actress who plays Kristen appears to be the #1 shipper of the two of them to be honest and what she was said about this moment yesterday was profound. She talked of how these two love one another even if their future together is uncertain in terms of such a thing happening. She stated that Kristen has been having an "emotional affair" with David for quite a bit, even if that had never come close to being physically consummated. I didn't fully agree with her take but I was blown away about how much she cherished the relationship between these two fictional people. I rarely find any actress, regardless of color, who has been so upfront in advocating for an onscreen connection with a black male character. I have also rarely seen a potential TV/movie pairing of a black man and a white woman so enthusiastically supported by viewers, which includes black women too. Typically discomfort and side-eyes and excuses for why they should not pair up typically make up the dominant reaction. And I include Bridgerton in this because that show was set up to be a romance between a black male and white female. Their love story was THE story. But with "Evil" the romance is a subplot, its not the center of the main storylines and it was never set in stone to happen. And it would not have gotten anywhere if there wasn't great chemistry between the leads and the audience hadn't clamored for it to go in that direction. But those two things happened and here we are. Although I should add that as much as fans ship them they are also torn over whether these two characters should be breaking vows to be together. Complex, complex, complex. We don't know if Kristen and David will have sex at that very moment. But like I said this whole thing is complicated. Its his first day as a priest and already he is failing to live up to his promise. She just had an affair/one night stand with a guy she didn't like a few episodes back and even though she felt guilty and promised not to cheat on her husband again, she too is on the verge of immediately failing to live up her promise. That is GREAT drama, not some cheap porn-like thrill. And the actors acted the hell (no pun intended) out of that scene. By the way this subplot is not too dissimilar from storylines in "Fleabag" or "The Thorn Birds".
Yeah, I get that, but it has nothing to do with my point. The point is, whether it's fiction or real life, there are those on here who celebrate cheating as though it is some kind of positive and "winning" representation of the BM/WW community when it isn't. It's disturbing on multiple levels. And then there are those who think as long as a BM & WW are fucking, it's a "win", which basically comes across as some creepy ass fetish rather than pro-IR. It's gross. The specific shows and plotlines are immaterial; it's not about any show in particular. Regardless of the the situation, fiction or not, cheating is never a positive thing. As for shows with BM/WW IR, I'd prefer those that don't reinforce the ignorant stereotypes or the same old shit plotlines. There also needs to be some kind of substance to them. Just having IR or potential IR in it doesn't count to me if it's not a good story. The overabundance of teenage-esque soap operas that are so popular on here have never done anything for me either, but different strokes for different folks. And I repeat (since there is evidently some confusion on this point), my recent posts are NOT about any show in particular.
Well if you comment was meant to be generic and not about any show in particular. I am not sure why you quoted people talking about specific shows in the first place. That is kinda on you in terms of the way we are reacting to you. I mean I don't watch shows for soap opera drama myself but it tends to come standard on most dramas so I am hardly going to get mad.
All the proper kinds of bm/ww IR romance stories on tv we want to see get cancelled. lol. SOUNDTRACK CURSED THE INNOCENTS CLOAK & DAGGER GOD FRIENDED ME REPUBLIC OF SARAH I see both sides of it. I get the chemsitry, tension and what they are trying to do with David and Kristen.... BUT Im not going to be a hypocrite because if Mike Colter got the role of the HUSBANDDDDD.... I know how I will feel about a show with that subplot. lol.
I find it amazing that with all the somewhat trashy IR representation sometimes celebrated in this thread that the pushback and indignation would seemed to be triggered by the rare and gender thoughtfulness found on "Evil."
Turner & Hooch TV Series (2021) Xavier & Jenna tie the knot on the season finale. Brandon Jay McLaren (Xavier Watkins) Caitlin Howden (Deputy Jenna Martin)
What exactly is "proper"? Does that equate goodness, wholesomeness? I'm more interested in quality writing. Quality is what I care about most, how well written a coupling is. I have some major issues with season two of "Evil" but none of the criticism is directed at how they handled Kristen and David. But let me go down your list of shows. Soundtrack: A forgettable show that never really caught on because it was not compelling enough. Cursed: Never got around to watching it and heard from most people it was really hurt by the substandard writing. And look while I love true black leading men getting true leading men opportunities, the ones that comes with sexuality and getting the lead girl laid, I was uncomfortable with the racial appropriation with the casting of a black Arthur. I just don't care for that stuff which is why I didn't watch Bridgerton either. And Cursed wasn't good enough to draw more than a slither of the audience Bridgeron got. The Innocents: Had its chance but didn't catch on because it was perceived as am "okay" show. I was excited for it and I thought it was good. But its cancellation was no great loss in my opinion. Cloak and Dagger : Was gutted that the show was cancelled even though admittedly its storytelling could be a bit uneven. The strength of the show was the chemistry between its leads but unlike "Evil" those characters didn't have nearly the personal boundaries to keep them from engaging in a relationship but the showrunner slow-walked it more than he should have. By the time he revealed the series was a romance and that the romance would occur in season three it was too late. That show wasted time giving Tyrone some unnecessary black girlfriend and it led to some of the audience losing interest. Thankfully the showrunners of Evil never fucked up like that. God Friended Me: Come on, man. It was a cutesy relationship on a cutesy show that CBS specializes in for its senior citizen audience. The pairing was fine but there was nothing complex or truly memorable about them at all. What stood out was simply him being black and she white, and it is still rare to see the main couple of a network series be that demographic. Republic of Sarah: Oh, how the mighty have fallen if we are holding this up as a standard bearer of any kind. All jokes aside I barely saw any of this series but even with an overall lack of exposure to it I am willing to bet my house that the couple couldn't match the dynamics of David and Kristen. This may surprise people but a show that I did think had a BM/WW pair that had a true level of complexity that rivaled David and Kristen was Shadow and Laura of "American Gods". All that cheating, all that death, all that resurrection, all of that searching all of that bitterness. In the third season the sigs seemed to indicate that these two were endgame. Unfortunately the characters were so separated during the show's run that fans shipped them with other people, specifically Laura with the Leprechaun. At least with Kristen and David the fans overall want them as endgame despite other persons who might get in the way with that. Anyhow going back to American Gods the cancellation of that show hit me hardest of all. I wanted that final season and I was so pleased in the first place to have a black man not only the lead of a genre series but t be involved in romantic entanglements with female characters other than black women. I mean that's fair and all but typically white males have been the lone guys on the winning end of these scenarios anyway (even if the other male competition is a white guy). This whole debate reminds me of the bullshit from black twitter and the writers of "Power" who felt they had to punish Ghost and call out how wrong his affair with Angela was because he was married. Meanwhile those same hypocrites on black twitter had no problem cheering on Olivia Pope fucking a married white President on Scandal and couldn't care less about the wife of said President. The writers of the show didn't feel guilty about it either. Can't the same be said about the god awful Tyler Perry version of that type of affair on one of his current shows? So let me make it clear that from season one I have found the character of Andy, Kristen's husband, to be a good guy who does not deserve to be cheated on. If anything happened between Kristen and David I assumed and hoped it would occur after that character was out of the way (divorce, death, lost at sea). This may still happen. And hell its not as if David is to blame for the possible ruining of her morality and her family. Kristen has already slept with another guy this season, her kissing David is tame by comparison. And who knows if what Kristen and David feel for another will ever be truly consummated. That being said I am not going to lose sleep EVER if a white male character gets the wrong end of the stick (is that an actual analogy?). White males have been fawned enough as THE desirable male in these story scenarios.
I think Cursed and The Innocents were good enough and had enough an audience to make it past one season. Cloak and Dagger wasted too much damn time and I have to stick up for Miles and Cara because they had major chemistry and I would love to see the actors in something well written.
To shorten this up some(lol). What I mean by 'proper' is a IR without the stereotypes that we have come to know which are: Cheating Love Triangle Standoffish black male Will they or won't they game Those I have mentioned were able to be built between the bm and the ww like they would do their white couplings. Without the stereotypical drama. And I agree with Laura and Shadow on American Gods. The end of the season finale in season 3 hinted at them being together and belonging together. Too bad they ended it there. But again I'm not going to be a hypocrite with anyone here on the "morality" of IR on TV because one of my favorite IR shows was Sorry For Your Loss.
