[IMG] There's much more ongoing traffic in "The Nerdz Lounge" thread + I look at this thread as dedicated thread for the main/original series, not any spinoff or prequel series.

Re-watching "The Long Night" of HBO's "Game of Thrones" tonight after watching it on my Vivid setting last night . . . that setting has MAGNIFICENT blacks but its not the best setting for night scenes like this one . . . I could barely see any details unless the Targaryen lovers were engulfing the battlefield in dragon fire. Tonight I'm using my best UHD setting (LSU) which has the best Wide Color Gamut & HDR Peak Brightness so it makes all the difference in nighttime shoots . . . "Vivid" is ideal for daytime scenes though

The TV to get Samson is the Vizio M658 for an outstanding picture quality of 7000:1 native contrast and 9815:1 with local dimming turned on. I bought the 4K Firestick too so everything is in High Dynamic Range (HDR) . . . usually DolbyVision but never less than HDR10+

The 55 inch M558 will fit in your car which is why I got it instead lol and the price is much more manageable too.

I learned that by lowering the Gamma Curve of the TV to 1.8 you can attain superior SDR & HDR brightness while 2.4 has the dimmest picture (steeper incline??) Well that is where I set "LSU" so I could really get the most out of scenes with HDR and it really helps in nighttime scenes to turn off "Clear Action" aka "Soap Opera Effect" but turn on "Cool" as opposed to "Normal" or "Computer" for color temperature to truly maximize the High Dynamic Range of this brand of TV.

I use Samsung Qled for deep blacks. I take a native 4K photo and then a above 1080p but below 4K photo. I utilize those to calibrate the settings. I used to have an Oled for a while, but burn-in is a real issue. It did, however, inform me of what deep blacks should look like.

GEORGE R.R. MARTIN'S LATEST WINDS OF WINTER UPDATE IS A MIXED BAG

It’s been nine years since A Dance with Dragons was published and fans have been waiting for George R.R. Martin to finish The Winds of Winter, the highly-anticipated sixth installment of A Song of Ice and Fire series. Last month, the author wrote that he was in isolation and “spending more time in Westeros,” giving fans reason to hope he would be done with the book soon. However, Martin’s latest Winds of Winter update is a mixed bag.

In his most recent blog update, Martin revealed that he wouldn’t be traveling to New Zealand as planned this year, since the annual World Science Fiction Convention (CoNZealand) has been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of canceling the con, however, it will be hosted virtually. Martin added that the “silver lining” is that the change of plans will give him more time to finally finish writing Winds of Winter.

While that is indeed a silver lining, the news also suggests that Martin is nowhere near close enough to finishing the book by this summer as promised.

For some background, Martin wrote last year that he would have The Winds of Winter completed in time for this year’s CoNZealand, which was scheduled to begin July 29 and end on August 2. If the book wasn’t completed by then, Martin wrote that he would allow himself to be locked away until he could deliver on his promise. Here’s what he wrote:

“But I tell you this — if I don’t have THE WINDS OF WINTER in hand when I arrive in New Zealand for worldcon, you have here my formal written permission to imprison me in a small cabin on White Island, overlooking that lake of sulfuric acid, until I’m done.”
Martin has been toiling away at Winds of Winter for years and has even released several chapters of the book online. But he's refrained from giving readers a hard deadline: promising he'd finish by CoNZealand 2020 might be the closest he’s ever come. Now that he’s isolated, however, it’s given him more time to finally write without distraction or interruption. That said, it still doesn’t sound like he was going to be done before the con, regardless of external influences.

Martin closed his latest post by suggesting some books for fans to read — Fire & Blood and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms among them — ahead of Winds of Winter’s release. He encouraged readers to check out his Wild Cards series, which includes 29 books that “should keep you reading for a good long time.” Sure, Martin continues to write, but implying that readers have time to read dozens of books before Winds of Winter suggests a firm release date is still along ways off.

Not the update I wanted, but I suppose it's better than the nothing we've been getting from him. I've already read A Night of the Seven Kingdoms, and I have a few books and stories of his I've yet to read (including Fire & Blood). I haven't bought or read any of the Wild Card series yet either. I guess I'll get over wishing he'd hurry the hell up. Oh well, it's not like I don't have plenty to read while I wait.

His ass needs to not only be finishing The Winds of Winter but also starting & making some headway on A Dream of Spring. Alas the latter clearly won't happen until he finishes the other book. SMDH.

Agreed. I know I said I need to get over my impatience with the wait, but I don't want to. To put it bluntly, I think he needs to quit jerking off and get it done already.

Wasn't any real reasons why he couldn't have had those last 2 books done & already out. Since GoT TV series initially came out, all he's been doing is celebrity guest appearances at various sci-fi/fantasy/comic conventions or Hollywood related outings. I'm not even going to repeat the various options he has available to him if he really wanted to get those final books done & out.

Yep. It's obvious the book haven't been a priority for him.

If he would have taken the last 4 years off from conventions & other outings to focus completely on those books, not one person would have been upset. In fact quite the opposite, especially if those books would be in their hands/in stores now or upcoming shortly.

Exactly. Who gives a rat's butt about meeting him or getting his autograph or whatever if he's not doing what created his fans in the first place.

"Fire & Blood" was sooooo hood! Especially because I didn't want to like it but it won me over with its effective reboot of "The Greens vs. The Blacks" as well as a compelling account of Jaeherys the Wise's adolescence and ascendancy to the Iron Throne. It is worth a purchase and I don't say that lightly . . . it will make an excellent basis for Miguel Sapochink and HBO to produce an adaptation should they elect to adhere faithfully (Laenor Velaryon has all three physical attributes of the Darkstar ~ Ser Gerold Dayne . . . could that be a clue that he is actually the son of a Targaryen as in Viserys Targaryen the Beggar King??)

I figure I'll enjoy it since I haven't read anything by GRRM I didn't like.
