With the announcement of HBO's new alt history series Confederate, Amazon has announced its new alt history series Black America. http://deadline.com/2017/08/black-a...nvisions-post-reparations-america-1202139504/ Black America, the drama hails from top feature producer Will Packer (Ride Along, Think Like A Man franchises, Straight Outta Compton) and Peabody-winning The Boondocks creator and Black Jesus co-creator Aaron McGruder an alternate history where newly freed African Americans have secured the Southern states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama post-Reconstruction as reparations for slavery, and with that land, the freedom to shape their own destiny. The sovereign nation they formed, New Colonia, has had a tumultuous and sometimes violent relationship with its looming “Big Neighbor,” both ally and foe, the United States. The past 150 years have been witness to military incursions, assassinations, regime change, coups, etc. Today, after two decades of peace with the U.S. and unprecedented growth, an ascendant New Colonia joins the ranks of major industrialized nations on the world stage as America slides into rapid decline. Inexorably tied together, the fate of two nations, indivisible, hangs in the balance.
So their answer to Confederate is segregation? White people have dumb ideas for race related shows, Black people have dumb ideas for race related shows. Oh, the humanity!
Uh...the slaves win, get their own homeland, and as the show begins, they are outstripping the United States. Would love to see it. A bunch of mostly black hoes who never picked up a history book are crying about it on Twitter. Fuck 'em.
To me that would only work if they are willing to defeat and expose racism within this victory, not encourage it with segregation. And maybe it's just me, but I think this would work better with Native Americans. This is their Country. They don't have to say White America or Black America.
I just hope that the people making these alternate history shows keep in mind just how different the world would actually be. Everything would be different music, technology, architecture, geopolitics and even elements of language. The world building to make these shows work would be on the scale of fantasy shows like Game Of Thrones. The new worlds that would spring from these earth shattering events, would be so unrecognizable that if we visited those worlds it would almost be like visiting an alien planet.
But that's the thing about most of these alternate history shows. They don't do them with actual world building in mind, they do them in order to make social commentary by trying to look like they aren't making social commentary.
I haven't seen the show, but I would expect there are still Blacks who live in this fictitious United States, and there are non-Black people who live in New Colonia.
Like I said on a similar thread it would be like Apartheid South Africa and Jim Crow South supersized.
Not really because in the series, THE AFRICAN HOMELAND WITHIN THE US IS A SUPERPOWER IN ITS OWN RIGHT AND IS OUTPACING THE UNITED STATES. READ.
Some argue that desegregation helped to wreck Black America. Imagine if Black Wall Street, Rosewood, etc were left alone and not destroyed by whites. Imagine if the few black thinkers of the day were actually respected because the vast majority of freed slaves couldn't read. Why are you agitating for Native Americans? These are the people who expelled all blacks within the Cherokee ranks. Let them march for their own TV show.
Sadly,it would be true had the slaves got their land, being respected, and having constitutional rights during Reconstruction. However, the cancer of slavery and racism had metezisized the body of America.
