DNY12,it happened to Oprah when she went into a Hermes store and they locked her out. She got a apology from them.
Exactly! My point is that had she been recognized... Her status (and wealth) would've gotten her admitted, but shince they didn't recognize her... They saw her as just another BW. It sucks that this happens, and sucks even more that a certain part of society still tries to deny that racism is alive and well.
I agree. It's just another example of how racist society is. Sure, some places are better than others, but it hasn't gone away.
On the DK's Europe debate.....Racism is huge in Europe. People from the middle east, and Africa are excluded from the job market, Socially excluded and placed into Ghettos (Ghettos not as bad as the US, and with better welfare services but social and economic exclusion none the less,) Gypsies are historically poor and in the streets. Yea a Black American might go to a few countries in western Europe and notice they are respected for being American. In fact you would be surprised the amount of trash people say about, Muslims, Turks (Yup some people are so stupid they call anyone from the middle east a Turk.) However police are not allowed to get away with killing minorities or anyone for that matter. Also one downside of nations like France, Sweden, Germany...Both of them not taking statistics on race has basically allowed their institutions to cover up who gets prosecuted/unemployed at a greater rate. For example I met someone who in confidence told me it was basically 25 foreigners and foreign background and 5 nationals incarcerated in the place they worked. I live out in Western Europe and know that if my name was Sahlik, Abdul. Or was East Asian. I would definitely find it difficult to make friends. and probably wouldn't have even gotten a visa. But yea it is very possible for a black person from the USA to immigrate to Europe integrate well, and pretend that its "Islamic beliefs. or "cultural difference." In fact most racists won't bother with Americans, because its simply less safe. Heck because we are American and from rich countries....A black American might actually find it easier than a Polish person...... I have to say I specifically am talking about Western/Northern European people. I have been warned Eastern Europe is way worse, and to "Be careful in Bulgaria."
MixedCali,is it true it is more dangerous for Blacks in Bulgaria? Where else in Eastern Europe that is dangerous for Black Americans.
Dude "white is right" is in every white dominated country dont get it twisted. In England it is subtler than the US because Brits are annoyingly polite and not in your face like Americans but racism IS still rife in the UK.
I think Americans often forget that most European countries are member states of the European Union, which gives equal rights to all citizens, no matter which country they may be living or working in. So for example a Finnish citizen living or working in Spain will have the same rights as a Spanish person. Just like a Californian living in Mississippi will have equal rights to a Mississippi person.
UPDATE: Airbnb introduces policies to stop guests being denied rooms because of RACISM - after '#AirbnbWhileBlack' highlighted concerns By Associated Press 08 Sep 2016 Airbnb has promised to implement new policies to combat racism faced by some of its users. The property sharing website also apologized for its slow response to claims people were being denied bookings for racial reasons. One of the big steps the company outlined on Thursday was a reduction in the prominence of profile photographs during the booking process. It also plans to automatically block future reservations for dates where a host has told someone that a property was unavailable. Among other things, new policies will expand Airbnb's 'Instant Book' program, which allows hosts to offer homes without approval of specific guests, as long as they meet basic qualifications, with a goal of 1 million listings by January 1. Users had also said their complaints of discrimination were ignored when they reported them to Airbnb. The report says the company has developed 'new tools' to 'reliably route concerns' to specialists. In addition to expanding Instant Book and blocking calendars from accepting reservations for a given time period once hosts state their property is unavailable, Airbnb will implement four extra steps. All users will be required to agree, beginning Nov. 1, to a 'stronger, more detailed nondiscrimination policy', the company will find comparable accommodations, starting October 1, for any guest who reports discrimination in booking a listing, having a booking canceled or in interacting with a host, provide*anti-bias training by January 31 to all Airbnb employees, and improve technology to 'root out bias' with a team of dedicated engineers. The company brought in former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and Laura Murphy, former head of the American Civil Liberties Union in Washington, D.C., to review complaints and develop new policies. Accusations that Airbnb has been ignoring complaints of racism have led several black entrepreneurs to create two new vacation rental websites where they say racism will not be tolerated. The new sites include Innclusive.com and Noirbnb.com.
I saw this just story yesterday as I finished up my airbnb reservation for going to New York in two weeks :/
With all this said people should be able to book to whoever they want. I would just ask that they are made to say what they want on their ads. If they want white only black only or whatever, its their house and they have a right to discriminate if they want. I also have a right to not book with them.
Housing as in? Jobs? Hard to say really I never want to be in a situation where someone hired me to work at their company because they were made to. I feel the same way about air bnb do you want to stay in a racist persons house because someone made them let you stay there? Would you want to give your hard earned money to a racist person? I say let them discriminate i simply won't be a customer.
Housing in terms of a place to live. Do you want to not have a place to live just because someone doesn't like blacks? I don't want to be forced to live in a dangerous area because people want to shuffle blacks in a particular area. And I don't want to be denied employment because of my skin tone or forced to work for far less because of my skin. How don't you see that fam?
So if a person owns a apartment building and they are racist you want them to be made to rent to you? You want to make a racist person richer? Is it their business or is it not? I will say though if they go that route it's up to black folks and other races that don't agree with it to not spend money with them. Also they should get no government write offs or kick backs. Would you want to work for a employer that disliked black people and you only didn't know because no one will let them say they don't?
I work with all races where some are qualified and some aren't. Black white and whatever else. Let me put that in a better way all are qualified some just aren't good at their job
I believe in affirmative action IF. The person is qualified. No lowering standards just to get more in.
