‘Zelda Maker’ lets Nintendo fans build their own Hyrule

‘Zelda Maker’ lets Nintendo fans build their own Hyrule

An alpha version of the fan-created The Legend of Zelda Maker level design toolkit was released this week, allowing players to build their own action-RPG worlds in the style of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda series.

The Legend of Zelda Maker features an interface similar to Nintendo’s own Super Mario Maker, replacing the software’s platforming elements with characters, enemies, and environmental details ripped from various games throughout the Zelda franchise.

In its current state, The Legend of Zelda Maker allows users to place and arrange a small collection of environmental details like rocks, trees, and rivers. A handful of enemy characters featured in the early Zelda games, including Octoroks, Moblins, and Goriyas, are also included in the toolkit.

Playing as either Link or Zelda, players wield swords and a number of secondary weapons inspired by past Zelda games. Currently implemented weapons includes Link’s boomerang, fire rod, and bombs.

Super Mario Maker, released for the Nintendo Wii U in September, is a robust game-design application that allows players to create and share side-scrolling Mario levels over the Internet. Nintendo’s online servers currently host thousands of levels created by users, and players can organize uploaded creations by popularity, quality, and trending status.

Predicting a cease-and-desist order from Nintendo, creator Justin Sink plans to replace The Legend of Zelda Maker‘s current tilesets with legally distinct artwork that does not feature Nintendo’s copyrighted games or characters.

“When I’ve got the ability to change the sprites, I will do so, and I will also add things that Zelda games don’t have to make it a somewhat unique experience,” Sink explains. “This is a very early build of the game, and it does not represent what the final game will look like.”

Further details regarding Sink’s planned additions are not yet known. The Legend of Zelda Maker is available as a free download for Windows PCs.

I'm sure Nintendo is pissed, but a tool like this could go a long way toward helping kids develop an interest in game design and coding. That's my favorite quality of Minecraft - it has my son thinking about architecture, design, etc.

It will. Besides, a Mega Man Maker would be better.

He's just telling it like it is. Nintendo really cracked down on these things over the past decade.

I wonder if the degree to which a company fights these things is in relation to their decline in market share?

Yes, also with their YouTube Partnership program, where they take in a percentage of the gamer's earnings from playing a Nintendo game, I think they are trying to keep themselves from going under since, after all, they are the only console maker that's strictly in the gaming market and that's their bread and butter.

"I was just thinking that the Joker would probably just say, 'F**k you,' and hang up," Jared Leto responded when Empire Magazine caught up with the actor to talk about his role as The Joker in Suicide Squad for the very first time. The actor is of course very familiar with what goes on in the head of the Clown Prince of Crime, especially as he never broke character during the shoot, something which led to him tormenting his fellow cast members in unique ways. For Jim Parrack (who plays The Joker's henchman, Jonny Frost) that included random calls throughout the day, with orders to spray paint roses black and filling a backpack with nine inch nails. "There was definitely a period of...detachment," Leto explains. "I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn't imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games. But at the same time it was very painful, like giving birth out of my prick hole."

Revealing that he listened to 1920s gospel music and read literature on shamans while playing The Joker, Leto offered some interesting insight into this take on the villain when he said, "I always get the sense that The Joker may be much older than people think. It's something different. If you don't break rules, you're not going to strike new ground. I think I'll be cooling down for the rest of my life." Suicide Squad producer Charles Roven also chimed in by revealing that the villain's dress sense has been inspired by Mexican cartels, while he's now, "More social...a very successful and smart businessman besides being a sociopath." Director David Ayer meanwhile had this to say about how Leto's take on the villain will differ to what's come before on the big screen. "The Joker is the third rail of comic book movies. There's a power to that character, and by some freaking miracle, through the incredible things Jared has done and the photography and all the other millions of things that went into it, we've cooked up something transcendent. He's scary."

I think that the Joker is probably the apex villain in the comic book world. Unlike other villains that Batman faced, Joker is peerless. Compare Joker to the Penguin(a gangster trying to look legitimate), Catwoman(an adventuress), Two-Face(a man with a God complex, but a murderer at the flip of a coin), and The Riddler(a man who lets everyone know that he is going to do something but it is cryptic), Joker would stand alone. I grew up with the animated one from Filmation's Batman and Robin and Cesar Romero's Joker. Both were toned down because of the censors. But in the comics, I was shocked when I read that he was a killer and he enjoyed it. Joker is not an ordinary criminal. He is a man of high intelligence coupled with concentrated madness. It is these qualities that have endured with him for decades along with Batman. This, indeed, is a powerful legacy for a villain.

Supergirl Premiere Top Ratings in Key Areas
    10.26.15

CBS’s new DC Comics-based Supergirl series had strong preliminary ratings in both total viewers and the key young adult demographics.

The show benefited from following The Big Bang Theory, Variety reported, retaining 76% of the nerd-comedy’s young-adult audience.

The Big Bang Theory led the night overall (4.2/14 in 18-49, 15.9 million viewers total), but Supergirl was a strong #2 for the night, (3.2 rating/10 share in adults 18-49 and 12.9 million viewers total).

The numbers also make the Supergirl the best of the fall season, rating #1 in adults 18-49 (3.2), slightly better than NBC’s Blindspot (3.1).

The total viewer numbers (12.9 million) also put Supergirl #1 in the fall premiere ratings measure, ahead of CBS’s Life in Pieces (11.3 million) and CB’s Blindspot (10.6 million).

Joker is essentially what Batman would become. All of the villains in Gotham City are essentially a reflection of what Bruce Wayne could have become if he did not discipline himself as a person of justice.

The show has received glowing reviews from many publications and the series is on the right track. There won't be a major drop off from the looks of it and the series will follow the same formula as The Flash with introducing new villains.

You may want to eat your words by the time the first season ends.

Not gonna happen. There are very few things in this world I feel I have a grasp on and comics/superhero genre is one of them and this show sucks. It had a great lead in and people love the genre right now but the story for the pilot sucked, the action was eh, and most importantly its on CBS. Its the wrong network for this kind of thing.

It's a cable network, where it also has shows like Scandal and the like, all of which are big primetime shows. This won't sink, and quite frankly, many of the critics praised the pilot, which fully contradicts your "high expectations, but quickly fell short" mentality regarding this show. It has established the main cast of characters, and above all, will definitely keep going, much like Arrow and Flash, where the former started off a bit on the slow side, but quickly picked up.

As far as I know, within the first season, you'll have to eat your words, kid.
