Interesting that so many say differences in musical tastes don't matter.

For a lot of people, their music is a big part of their identity. For many, it's the theme of the subculture they belong to ... Often it informs their choices in clothes, friends, "scenes", mates...

For example, can a woman who's really into death metal be happy with a guy who's really into hip hop? Those subcultures don't mix much.

For those of you who say the music doesn't matter -- what about political compatibility? Surely the politics are a deal breaker... ?

I wanna hear someone say politics don't matter... :smt119

I'm a moderate. Although politics matters it probably doesn't matter as much to me as others. As long as she's not tea party bat shit crazy then we good.

Clever and funny (again) Raider. Completely agree music shapes personality. Which shapes chemistry

Not with music I absolutely can't stand, but different styles of music are fine. I like a lot of different styles. That being said, I would prefer a woman who loves Mongolian throat singing over a woman who listens to country music (outside of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash). I have dated a woman with sharply different musical tastes and it did cause a bit of friction.

What's really interesting is that people get the impression that there is only one form of music that someone fancies, when in fact, no one is really one-genre specific. You can enjoy death metal as much as you can hip-hop, especially if you are very much exposed to all forms of music. Also, if there's a sense of open-minded means, you can always find some sort of balance and may even appreciate the music of another. It's not rare, but it's not common either. You just pick what you fancy.

Co-siggy. I like hip hop and metal almost equally. Thing is that I have a hard time finding the metal that I like and usually have to rely on friends with good taste to tell me what's good.

Then I've had people say they can't picture me banging my head. Well why would I have to bang my head?? Sometimes I listen to it to simply get out of my own head.

Hahaha, people have preconceived notions about who we are and what we are suppose to like. It is funny. I get that a lot.

    Yep.

If metal is supposed to make you head bang then salsa is supposed to make you dance well. It simply doesn't work that way. I love salsa and my dance skills are still mediocre, so there's your consistency.
