Indian Man Faked Being Black

The Brother of comedian Mindy Kaling faked being black to get into medical school. Because according to him, his scores and grades weren't good enough as an Indian-American. So he altered his appearance, left off his first name and re-applyed as an African-American. And as a "black" student he was accepted. His reasoning was that affirmative action would make up the difference in his scores.

The part that kind of irks me the most, is the implication that Black students have a lower standard for admittance to medical school than other races.

Not sure what irks you the most - the fact that the schools thinks that(according to this), or Mindy's brother?

Anyway, I'm calling BS on this as a comedy stunt to get exposure and traffic to his website. Where was he accepted - he said he interviewed. Is an interview acceptance? I might be out of the loop.

Apparently they weren't good for any race for him. He still dropped out.

Between 1978 and 2008, 75% of all medical school graduates practicing medicine were White, while Blacks
or African Americans(6.3%), American Indians/Alaska Natives and Hispanics or Latinos comprised a combined
12.3% of the U.S. physician workforce. Asians and Blacks or African Americans were the largest groups of
racial and ethnic minority physicians (12.8 and 6.3%, respectively) (see Figure 1).

If you were to combine Hispanic and black, you would get 11.8 % of doctors against 12.8% of asians

    page 17 of the report.

Blacks are more likely to not be a doctor in an environment where 13 percent of the population is black and maybe 3% are asians. not quite resprentive in the stats.

    also he added

'He chooses to sidestep, downplay, or flat-out ignore how the same racism that led to him being harassed by cops and store clerks keeps black applicants on the fringes of elite educational institutions for generations,' Stereo Williams wrote.

'It's easier for him to tap dance for the right wing as the brown man who 'gets it', while conveniently missing how ongoing racism makes affirmative action absolutely necessary,' he added.

Which is the point of the affirmative action!!!! because the system is so systemically racist.

The odds on you getting there if you are black are low in connection with dealing with your average person.

An interview is not an acceptance. Interview means you pass the cut off. It looks real. He got accepted to Saint Louis University. This doesn't mean the document is real though. This was done in the 90's. Rules were loose to be a doctor.
You could be a convict and still become a doctor.

granted 1985 but pretty close to the time he applied.

That's wrong, but where did he get the name 'JoJo' from??lol

Asians don't benefit from Affirmative Action at all?? I find that hard to believe.
I understand among Asian Americans the competition is fierce for college and graduate school admissions, but schools are still looking to fill a demographic quota on diversity.

I've encountered some really amazing Indian doctors over the last few years so I'm kind of conflicted.

Immigrants always try to separate themselves from that 'Black' label until it's convenient.

It's no secret that race plays a factor in the admissions process for various schools. White opponents of affirmative action have been trying to lure the asians over to their side for the longest, since asians are being passed (due to their over representation at colleges) for blacks or latinos.

There's a ton of articles on this. I've actually seen asians still support affirmative action, even if it means they'd lose a spot to a black or latino

    Jojo is his middle name.:p

When it comes to grad degrees, asians are over saturated. They make up a small amount of the population and have high percentage in degrees. The point of affirmative action is to give people a chance that they don't have it and to link the population with the opportunities and that isn't happening from what I see at the medical school that I work in. I imagine I will see the same in med school.
