I'm sure there's a legal standard of sorts as to whether the statement impacts the firm/organization and reflects attitudes that potentially relate to performance of duties at that firm/organization. Remember Tiger losing sponsors because of off-the-green activities? Sucks, but I can understand the administration's position too. What if this reflects some deeper view of minority youth as thugs needing "strong medicine", when his school is 99% minority and majority black? Could parents feel confident that their child had access to fair and unbiased educational opportunities in the light of something like that? Loki, care to chime in here?

 

Punished/fired for giving an opinion on far-off current events...instead of being punished/fired for 'actual actions/track record at your job'

Freedom of speech only protects against government preventing a person from expressing their ideas based on content, but doesn't automatically preclude an employer having the right to discharge you for speech they don't agree with as part of its own right to express its support or disapproval.

I don't think he should have been fired, however. I believe most people think the way he does and expect it, so it would not have offended me anyway.

Yes, people may appear to be overly sensitive these days, but I think that's not about being PC, just that now there are voices in the discourse that have been traditionally ignored. I don't think people were less sensitive in the past, just that they were powerless to do more than just be mad and stew about it.
