I'm watching this week's episode of VICE and the second half of the show is talking about China's voracious appetite for shark fins and the damage Chinese and Southeast Asian illegal fishing is doing to the ocean food chain. It's scary to contemplate what the impact of so many people consuming and polluting at a US rate (or worse) will mean for the world.

With fewer Chinese women born, how long will it be before the men have to accept the inevitability of marrying and reproducing with non-Chinese women? I'm sure that doesn't make for smooth relations with non-Chinese men in their midst.

This is unlikely to happen. You have to get through the chinese culture. and then you have to have the money to move. Remember there is a surplus of women in Russia... Any one see the chinese running over there.... More likely the number of women will catch up.

I'm not Malthus, but it's not hard to see how an infinitely expanding population on a finite rock with only so much food is a formula for disaster. 24 million doesn't seem like much in the grand scheme of things, but factor in outmarriage, emigration (especially if they perceive the men as repressive and want to escape), and other factors, and they're in quite a pickle. If you are going to abort fetuses or engage in population control, genetic diversity would dictate that you maximize the number of women as carriers of fetuses, rather than males.
