While I totally agree with the rest of your post, I respectfully can't co-sign the first sentence. Islamists raided and pilfered Mali's Timbuktu. So while Islam had their own scholars, they were not intellectually superior to other cultures. They also forced Malians (as they did my ancestral people) to convert, or die.

No they weren't. And majority are not to this day. I know many peaceful muslims, personally and in my travels. Muslims who abhor the violence like anyone else.

However there are 1.6 billion muslims today, and even if 5% were radical (the estimate is 15%) that's millions and millions who radically believe that we all must be muslim and live under Sharia Law, or die.
