With regard to the argument about other groups not just "forgetting about it", a better parallel would be with the Irish-American community. Is anyone familiar with the way Irish Catholic US citizens (not all members of the community, obviously, but in certain cities like Boston and Chicago it's pretty common) hold IRA fundraisers and sympathize with the group and can't stand the British. That has been going on since the Middle Ages.

Reminds me of my late great-grandmother saying "colored", lol. When I was a kid that's what was used in professional/polite circles.
