You want a reason not to have the death penalty. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2843670/Prosecutors-drop-charges-3-men-40-years-later.html I feel sad for these men. how do you pick up the pieces? One man missed his mother's funeral. How do they start a family? so sad. What a tragedy.... Again, I say how can one be so happy after such a nightmare. My question for you is If you were wrongfully convicted but had a chance to escape to another country, would you?
I think I mentioned this one in the cosby accusation thread It's good to keep an eye on the legal system and how literally each week, some new black person (I insert color here because most of the DNA exonerated prisoners are/were black and the law unfairly targets racial minorities) is found wrongfully convicted I give the law it's due...it would 'appear' as if the majority of the time they lock up bonafide criminals who got caught. Butttt...that does not and should not make us overlook the fact that innocent people are having their lives completely destroyed, in the longitudinal course of justice. This is why I am very much for prison reform. Many people don't care how awful prisons are because they think they only house 'bad people.' They forget the fact that there are/were hundreds of innocent people caught up in the system, forced to endure a place people associate with hell. Stop being comfortable with acceptable casualties and make it your priority to have your voice heard on reform.
Even better Why has the law made it so easy to convict certain people? Shady evidence Single witness testimony Improper prosecution methods List goes on an on and people are still being railroaded into prison, at the behest of a need for a conviction
True. Jailing 3 men on the "testimony" of a 12-yr old (who couldn't even see what happened from his position on the bus).... Pathetic.
I wouldn't be too upset if going to jail was like a forced stay at a resort (google prisons around the world and see how archaic ours are - some countries with much nicer prison conditions actually have lower crime rates), where prisoner safety was number one and you didn't have to worry about gang rapes or being stabbed every time you went to take a gotdamn piss But Considering how dangerous some of our fucking schools are...I guess it's only natural that prison would resemble that
The innocence project continues to work tirelessly to have the wrongly accused released...in this case I am so glad that someone came forward with the truth..I hope these men sock it to the state and are awarded big dollars to live the rest of their lives comfortably
These are only the cases we know about, and getting those overturned probably took a tremendous amount of diligence Now imagine how many other people are actually innocent and still rotting in jail The innocence project has helped release dozens of people in cases where DNA could be tested to prove a person's innocence...they've also screwed up the release of a guy by trying to tie him to a crime, in order to free another person....so they're not perfect either They have also shed light on cases where people were freed without DNA...but admit that it is harder to do so in those situations One could only imagine the 'true' level of fuckery going on in America
I think some of the payouts are a slap in the face as well One guy received like 20-30k per year he was incarcerated..and he was in for like 10 years I'm not feeling that one
The west Memphis three they had no DNA ...just a witch trial...no one else has been convicted but more than likely it was the boyfriend or stepfather of one of the kids Some of the innocence project cases just make you shake your head at the system...how a jury ever convicted these people
And now you have those witch-trials happening all over again, this time via the internet And......... As a result of witch-trial/mob justice, you actually have people getting physically hurt (or threatened with bodily harm) in the process History truly does repeat itself and no matter how much we claim to be more civilized than other nations, we truly are not Progress is an illusion It's all fun and games until you're the one who's life is affected through wrongful imprisonment Nice to see 'humans' write each other off when it suits them
This is very sad that a fibbing child looking for attention, put away 3 innocent men. What's worse is that he KNEW them! It seems very clear that 3 other men got away with a murder. (hopefully fate caught up with them and they died in prison or were killed). I am heart-filled they at least are free now to live the rest of their lives. (well 2 of them are, for now).
