That's a pretty damned good question. My paternal instincts would be more the along the lines of

"Look son, I know you're young and you have things driving you hard, but I have to ask you, 'Why the fuck you didn't keep your damned mouth shut!?'"

Would that make me a bad parent? Maybe. But I know that is something that I would have a hard time swallowing.
