There is a fundamental difference between rapping and singing. Rapping might incorporate the same feelings and emotions you find in other genres, but the art is so heavily weighted toward poetics, it's almost artifical.

Rappers care about the fable. They use emotions to analyze emotions. There's a certain implex, where you can discern good and bad fortunes, and obviously they convey these changing fortunes through emotion. But, again, it's more about the story.

If you're telling a good story, who cares if it's 'authentic' or not?

So many legendary rappers. So many bullshit stories. Yet every one of ya'll suspended disbelief.

So in order to rap....you must have done all the following:

    -shot someone
    - got shot
    - stuck someone
    - sold dope
    -robbed someone
    - been in jail (optional..got to get caught but it is proof)

And this is the problem in a nutshell. Why does Rap/Hip Hop automatically equals to any of the above listed shit? So that's what it means to you? Is that why you keep bring up "gangsta rap" throughout this thread in most of your posts? Drank that Kool-Aid did we? SMH.

I know what you were responding to. The references to "that life". But "that life" doesn't necessarily mean criminal lifestyle, but just coming up rough in the hood or other low income area. A lot of rappers, whether black or white or male or female, didn't come up in the hood or low income but like to rep as if they did.

I can dig that.....but with iggy...she was dirt poor in aussie land. Came to america at 16 with no parents and just winged it. Thats her story.

They are mad saying she should rap about aussie and stop rapping in american accent.

Now...i heard two songs (fancy and mediocre). Both are cool. Nothing to do with anything but partying and dating.
And they talking shit bout that. Smh.

I think its more of a ww hitting garder than them. Flex was just giving his opinion about her music. Saying its trash (havent heard more than that about what he said or read, So im talking ignorantly).

The shit goes deeper than that. At it's core a lot of people who consider themselves true hip hop heads don't like the fact that hip hop is now totally corporate own & totally commercial, especially when none of the corporate heads currently running shit aren't black or brown. Hip Hop has always been considered an art form and not really about airplay & record sales. A lot of the current crop of artists are mediocre to sub par compared to older artists and a lot that prefer to stick to the underground & indie circuit. There are white female artists on the underground & indie circuit who kill Iggy A plain & simple, so that whole argument that she's getting hated on because she's white that's bull. She's just easy to market. Simple as that.

You said it perfectly. I don't knock Iggy for capitalizing, someone is going to so why shouldn't it be her but let's call things what they are. She's not a dope rapper and gets to skate by on mediocrity the same way Vanilla Ice did purely because of her skin color. Eminem is always a good refrence because dude not only made it based on talent but he's often honest enough to point out much of his success is because he's white. I knew this bs was race driven when K-Rock in NY which only plays rock and roll played Lose It like 80 times a day. The song is not only an obvious rap song but it's a rap song about becoming a damn rapper. That shit made it clear as day that a lot of bs is race driven and you can't get mad at people for recognizing it and calling it out. Especially when its someone who came up when female MCs had to be fucking dope, they had to make it through cyphers, battle dudes, and being appealing to sell records. Iggy couldn't stand with Foxxy, Lil Kim, Mc Lyte, Left Eye, Da Brat, even Rage shit even Queen Latifah had some dope bars, so it's easy for someone from that era to look at this obvious corporate phony and get a little salty. Again not knocking Iggy at all, she's making her money and to be honest I'm glad its a white woman who is actually really interested black culture via the men she dates and circle she has opposed to someone who purely uses us like Miley Cyrus or Justin Beiber who are obviously going through a faze.
And to clarify to me about that life means someone who actually really loves hip hop, someone who will do a freestyle off the top, someone who will do a cypher, and has thoughtful and well put together lyrics along with the shit that sells. Current examples include dudes like Troy Ave, Drake on his first album, Big Sean, Jay Electronica, Kendrick Lamar. There are dudes who are about that hip hop life not gangsta rap there's a difference and I wish people would be thoughtful enough to make that distinction.

My issues with her music really have nothing to do with if she is about 'that life' or not. I'm just not into wack shit.

Now if thats their argument (according to digga she didnt mention the above. Its more about her accent and lack there of and not about that life. ). Then they are hypocrites. They understand the business. Hell there are metal heads saying the same thing. Hip hop is not unique in that factor. Like in hip hop....artist go unknown. Thats life. Cash money was doing well w/o corp but they went ahead because its business.

If she is butt hurt about corporation money or whatever....her black ass need to stop taking checks. Its a business.

People become rappers because they :
-like the music and think they can rap
    -money

Yeah... i get that. Im not gonna convince you should like it.

I just think it bs that we cant enjoy shit because of side shit.

Shes no vanilla ice where shes saying her life is this but really that....as far as i know.

Hell i wouldnt care if her dad was warren buffett...to me her music is enjoyable. She will never be nas and not too many will come close
