http://www.businessinsider.com/ncaa-revenue-expense-report-2011-6 Only 22 programs of the division 1 schools football programs are prpfitable. If thats the case is that one of the reasons of high tution? If college fb is not profitable should hs and college fb continue?
Not really news. It has been a long known fact that colleges lose more money than gained from their football programs but that is not the point of them having them this article only takes into consideration the amount of revenue generated by the programs. But what do they count as revenue is it just ticket sale and concessions and merchandise. The fact is they have a greater impact in generating money on the outside. Ever hear the name T. Boone Pickens or Phil Knight. They are two very wealthy men that love their former Universities and are very generous to said universities. They don't call Oregon Nike U for nothing. They are not alone with their generous nature. If you look behind the curtain lots of the schools have these big time donors who love to give money especially after the school has success on the field. Then there is another factor when you have a successful program you tend to be on national tv a lot. This is basically free advertising for your school. Imagine you are a high school student with excellent grades and extras and can go anywhere you want you are from new Hampshire you are watching a USC game you see one of their commercials notice they have programs you want to study you never really thought about USC as a choice but now you do. So theses schools are able to reach even more prospective students through their sports programs. The school will never admit to it but they know that after a championship particularly football or men's basketball the number of applicants jumps the following year. Lets also not forget the TV money from all the new networks. I don't think any of that is counted as football generated revenue. Schools in the Power 5 get $10+ million a year from their networks but that is athletic department revenue or school revenue not football generated although it is primarily football driven. In the end losing the money on these programs is worth it to these schools because they make it up in many other areas outside of the field. In other words the benefits of having these programs far outweigh the costs.
You make a compelling argent but thete arent enough donatipns to justify the fb program. So what about pickens.... You have hundreds of other universities that are under water....it doednt make sense.
