$8/hr of my salary gets paid by the federal government, because I have a disability. It helps the employer out, gives them a push to hire people with disabilities and whatnot.
So sure, landing that job was tough just because of how many barriers existed communication-wise (while other barriers may exist for other minorities)... but once I was in for the interview... freaking goldmine to the employers that know of the grants.

Athena didn't say a mostly minority police force. Just that it's easier for the pregnant minorities to get a position. Face it, if government agencies or whatever have a minority quota to meet... female is still considered a 'minority', plus being a racial minority.... counts as more for the quota. A black woman in a wheelchair? Awesome! That's 3 counts covered easily enough.

Doesn't make it right, since the further away from "normal" (white, rich able-bodies man) we are, the harder it gets to find rewarding employment. So when certain places need to meet a quota, it gets a bit easier to find work there.

A lot of that is trying to convince minorities to apply. The military has simply given up and lowered their requirements for visible minorities.

As a child I wanted to be a bus driver. Later when I had the chance ( I passed the tests for NYCTA, and got the job offer) I decided to pass and go to college. I majored in accounting which I absolutely hated, and I'm an IT professional. This is definitely my calling.

I wanted to be a pilot or an architect.

However, I don't regret my career as a custodian, because we do make pretty good money and I get to meet lots of women.

I have a crush on a custodian at work. I think he caught me trying to take a picture of him the other day. I think he has a girlfriend, but nothing wrong with fantasizing right? Maybe I can persuade him to shut my office door and pose with me for a "bored at work" pic for posting.

This exact scenario has been a fantasy since I first picked up a broom and a box of vo-ban.

It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it.

And while we're on the subject, how's about I come over and sweep you off your feet.

As a kid I fancied myself as a bit of an artist, I even sent pictures into Artbeat none ever ended up on "The Wall" I even said I was a year younger on one of them lol

Then I dreamed of being an heir to a substantial fortune.

Then I thought I could be a singer and would enter Karaoke competitions on holidays, won a handful and I won miss camber sands when I was 14 (go me!!) ;)

Then I wanted to own my own shop that only sold beautiful things, like the best curio/antiques shop in the world.

Never wanted to be a superhero, Vet, Fireman, Nurse or Doctor although I did toy with the idea of joining the Territorial Army when I was 17 but got busy with work.

I also fancied the Police in my teenage years and actually applied to the Metropolitan Police when I was 19, I was totally impressed with the then 27,000 start off wage including London waiting and the free rail travel within 60 miles of London, plus free Gym membership
I got as far as the 2nd stage of having the GP do my health check and sent it off, I waited and waited but never received the follow up, but apparently I did and my Mum hid it for her own over protective parent reasons.

I wanted to be a lawyer, teacher or a secretary lol. Looking back though, I think I just loved the idea of dressing up for work. I'd always put on my sisters pageant dresses and heels and play "business" :D What I would do for work came second to what I could wear to work.

Master Distiller would be a hell of a dream job. I would be interested in making ales, lagers, as well as various whiskies and rum.

My son has a bio degree and his dad suggested moving out to Cali to work for a winery. He chose to go back to school for a trade, though.
