    Disgraceful.

Detroit just raised rates by almost 9%. The average monthly bill is almost double the national average!

The United Nations in Geneva have condemned it.

IMO, water should be, if not free, fully subsidized for the poor and elderly. How can that city live with itself when their corrupt former mayor lived high on the hog for years and no one did shit, yet they want to withhold a fundamental need of its residents? People are struggling right now.

The tragic irony is that 21% of of the world’s surface freshwater is in the Great Lakes alone, so this is just terrible symbolically as well.

It's not the city doing this. This is the Emergency Manager, Kevyn Orr. He was not elected to office. Rather, he was appointed by Govenor Snyder. Orr over rules the democratically elected mayor and city council. Orr cannot be voted out nor is he subject to term limits. He serves at the pleasure of Gov. Snyder.

In short, if you live in Detroit, you have no real representation in your own city. Regardless of who you and your fellow Detroiters elected.

I see. Thanks for the additional back story. So Orr co-ordinatef this on the Gov's orders?

I ask because I see my city going in the same direction, since we are selling our P.U to a private corporation in Boston. However, it's our elected city officials behind the sale in order to satisfy the city workers pension fund which has been heavily borrowed from and grossly mismanaged.

Its a shame Detroiters don't have a voice because it seems the people in charge have lost thier minds.... of all utilities to target. And with bare notice - what about the sick residents? It feels like the residents are being shamed for not paying, when the ability to find/keep a job there is difficult.

My city is gone mad. This is inhumane and dangerous to
and unhealthy. They're begging for an outbreak to happen.

Totally agree with you. The elderly and sick should NOT have had their water turned off.

Dark, there are really good people on the ground there trying to do something. But, the truth of the matter is Detroit's situation is very, very complicated.

    What do you propose?

I think the burden should be on the shoulders of industry in Detroit. Did you know, the amount of water used to produce a car is just over 39,000 gallons of water. That's enough water to fill up a 20x40 foot inground swimming pool. I know all the large car manufactures pay their water bills, no one never think what city water plant have to do to clear this water for drinking & bathing. As in good faith I think all heavy industrial businesses, they all need to pick up tab so the people of Detroit can continue having their water running.
