Tony Parker is next. There's only so many times that you can drive to the basket like a madman against much larger defenders and end up in a heap on the floor after taking a shot.
Man, if AI wasn't so easily dis-likable, his name would be coming up when people mention the all-time greats, especially at his position. People forget how good and versatile he really was. Also consider he lead a 76ers team just as bad as those Lebron Cavs teams to the NBA finals where they took a game from the Lakers before getting their asses handed to them. This was before they drafted a Chris Webber who was just ready to hit the downside of his career and drafted AI2. Aside from Isiah Thomas and Chris Paul, I struggle to think of many players below 6'2" that were able to dominate the game like AI. To be honest, I'd take AI over either of those two... and I didn't even like AI, really.
i agree with everything you said. he fucked his money well too...at least from what i gather. i loved AI. He was the joint. he had the most famous rant about practice. that shit was classic. please somebody post that shit. im sure there remixes of it too.
Truth. One of the greats. With his skills he should at least have a lucrative post-career sponsorship racket, but he kind of screwed himself with all those off-court antics.
Must disagree with you here Ore, AI was a transcendent talent for sure, but also had a pitifully poor attitude (both on and off the court), was a shoot first point guard, never understood what it meant to be a leader, and his "practice" rant is still echoing in the hall of fame of abject, astounding, spectacular, stupidity. You mentioned his off court antics, that is my main beef with him, never questioned his heart and desire in games, but his juvenile, lazy, dismissive, inarticulate, uneducated, me first attitude, always rubbed me the wrong way. It is no coincidence that he ended up divorced, broke/bankrupt, with a criminal record and with multiple kids by multiple women and child support he could not meet. It is these qualities (not to mention wasting his talent, how good could he have been if he actually worked on his game in practice and listened to coaches that were trying to help him?) that contribute to the negative stereotyping of Black men as a whole. I mean seriously, he was arrested on 14 felonies and misdemeanor charges, including assault, terrorist threats, and weapons offenses. Yes, most of them were dismissed but still, not the image anyone wants in their star player.
I don't think we disagree on this point at all, Loki. This is what I was trying to say. He had all the skills in the world, but his off-court conduct essentially ruined everything for him. If he had focused on his game and kept the nonsense to a minimum, he would be overflowing with sponsorships and opportunities. He is the reason no one wants him associated with their brand. I hadn't thought of another point you mentioned, though, namely that he brought that attitude to his playing of the game as well.
yeah, he brought hip hop to the court ....he had swag like a mofo...and he didnt have to practice...come on man...its practice
"How I'ma make my teammates better with practice" Might just be the most ignorant shit I've ever heard from a professional athlete.
Unreal. It's funny and sad at the same time. I've never seen this before.
