While the right continues to insist that racism is dead in America, pointing to the fact that a black man has not only been elected President but he was reelected as proof, it is no great feat to find blatant and unapologetic examples of racism in the midst of these claims.

Last summer it became widely known that some fraternities and sororities on the campus of the University of Alabama not only discriminated on the basis of race, they do so openly, admitting that one of the qualifications for becoming a member is that the prospect be white.

The sorority which drew all of the attention, Alpha Gamma Delta, refused to even consider two students who seemed to be eminently qualified. One girl had maintained a 4.3 GPA in high school, was salutatorian of her class and came from a family with a history of local and state public service and with strong ties to the University. Although reportedly just as well qualified the other girl requested that she be allowed to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation and there was no information released about her qualifications.

Katie Smith, Anthony James, Chisholm Allenlundy and Justin Thompson, members of the Student Senate were embarrassed that this type of racism still existed on their campus and decided to do something about it, introducing a resolution to the Senate which would condemn the practice.

They might have foreseen the ultimate failure of their proposal, it was only brought to the floor in the final meeting of the 2013-2014 session, meaning that it had to come up for a vote or die since no proposals will carry over to the 2014-2015 session.

Senate rules required that once introduced to the floor, a period of technical questions had to take place before any motions — including a motion to call a vote — could be made.

Immediately after the technical questioning ended, a senator sympathetic to the Greek community moved that the resolution be sent to committee, fully knowing that this meant it would die without ever being voted on.

“When the technical questions phase came to a close, one of the senators asked, or made a motion, that the resolution be sent to committee knowing well that it would die in committee,” Allenlundy said. “That was followed by a little more debate, and then a roll call vote was held where – I don’t remember the exact count, but I know it was pretty overwhelmingly in favor of the resolution going to committee. So it died there.”

The count was overwhelmingly in favor of the racist Greek system, 27 voting to send it to committee, 5 voting no and 2 voting present.

Clearly at Bama, racism is not only alive and well, it thrives and is accepted as the way things are by the majority of students.

Hmmm, really brings to mind the whole "how come we can't have a WET?" Topic.

Difference between all black frats and all white ones is that: there are more whites on campus so they don't have any need to be specialized like that. I know at some historically black colleges, there are all white frats and sororities... I don't see anything wrong with that but at a mostly white college, there's an issue.

Actually no because those frats actually let others in. Black frats and sororities don't determine who can join based on race.

The irony being that it won't stop them all white sorority chicks from sexing the black football players on Bama's football team. Given how big college football is down there those dudes are like superstars to those folks. Things that make you go hmmm.

There are Black frat members in fraternities at Alabama, but still the Greeks on campus apparently want to reserve the right to reject a candidate based on race.:confused:

If you have options for college sorry but I don't know why you would ever go to school in the deep South as a Black person.

Because you may have grown up in the area. More now than ever people are taking advantage of in state tuition since its cheaper

Some white students go to HBCUs because it is more affordable than a lot of major colleges and universities. This, of course depends on the major. Fraternities and sororities on HBCUs however, are a different matter. My late older brother and my younger brother both were members of Phi Beta Sigma. My older brother went to Bethune-Cookman College(now called Bethune-Cookman University) and my younger brother went to Florida A &M University. I had been to one frat party. Lots of drinking there. However, there were not a lot of women, black or others there. I did not even see a white, or a Latina there. I did see one or two biracial men there. I would've gone to BCU at the time I graduated from high school and perhaps, joined Phi Beta Sigma. But after looking at pictures of a hazing ritual where the pledges were sitting on a couch, blind-folded and eating raw onions, and hear people claim that they have the pull to get me inside literally for free, I decided it was not a good idea.

    This isn't 1954.

I would not send a child of mine to a school like Alabama on the false hope he or she could teach a bunch of generational bigots to change their ways.

It's not like a job. You PAY to go to college, not the other way around.

    No thanks.

Great point. Fuck that sacrificial lamb bs. At this point people who think the way bigots do isn't about ignorance it's about pure hate our presence on these type of campuses won't change shit.

I wouldn't encourage my child either way, but if they made the decision to go with a full understanding of the situation, I wouldn't discourage it either.

It's not about teaching or converting bigots, it's about being proud of who you are and not limiting yourself for anybody. We're talking University of Alabama, not KKK Community College here.

but is their a difference?......if you have frats discriminating based on race it's just like the kkk and if the student culture allows it....you are belittling yourself by being in that an enviroment, the only choice is to leave that enviroment.

I don't get why Jaisee is playing dumb on this one. All your presence does in a situation like that is make you a possible target.

Exactly. Any excuses to suggest otherwise is just another way of saying "I give up."

And nothing will change from that point on and the status quo will eventually return to more reactionary times. Give them a step, they'll take a mile.
