Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant has found himself in the middle of a social media firestorm after he ruffled feathers with comments he made about the Trayvon Martin case.

During an interview for a profile of the basketball star featured in the April 4th issue of the New Yorker, Bryant had some interesting thoughts on the events surrounding the case that captured national attention. According to Colorlines, he specifically criticized Lebron James and the Miami Heat for posting a photo wearing hoodies in solidarity with the teen's family.

I understand his sentiment. However, he could have used a better example to prove his point. Trayvon is still too fresh of a wound.

You don't hear any other group saying shit like that.

He should just keep his mouth shut and raise his ugly ass children.

I think it's evident that delusional Zimmerman was a rogue, wanna-be whatever disturbed man who recklessly took a teen's life. Them's the facts.

Zimmerman will reap what he sow, RIP Trayvon. But, we need to move on from this incident and focus on black on black crime. This shit happens more rapidly than white on black.

Very true. I just think that Trayvon's death is so visceral because he was in fact an innocent young man who appeared to be doing all the things a young man should do to be left alone in this society: academics, athletics, no crime sheet, and yet he is harassed and murdered. As atrocious as black-on-black crime statistics are, a lot of it takes place between people involved in criminal activity. And most of the crime committed anywhere is intra-group. That doesn't make it okay, but I think I'm safe in saying that people are hurt more by the murder of innocents than criminals, real or perceived. The murder of the innocent young woman - Hadiya Pendleton - in the park last year in Chicago is another such example.

As for Kobe, I never expected him to have much of a social conscience. I am probably wrong, but everything about his persona appears to be about self-absorption. I agree with the sentiment that you don't subscribe to anything simply because it involves a black person, but you should oppose obvious injustice wherever it occurs.

I still get angry when I think about it. Young Hadiya's death too.

I remember her tragedy and from RA's thread. I found a touching passage from her parents...

I can't imagine the kind of grace and strength it would take to overcome that tragedy. My heart goes out to them. They are truly impressive people.

It comes to show that a person can choose their battles. Bryant chose to be detached. He believes that the black community has to move on and grow and not play the victim. Well, he is right, but, I think he should've used better language to convey this sentiment. When he had his problems, he wanted all his fan to stand behind him. I honestly thought he was crazy for hooking up with this young girl compared to his wife(a lovely lady, I might add). And then the public apologies in press conferences(a huge diamond ring). George Zimmermann and Trayvon Martin are forever linked. There is no way he can or ever will escape this. Trayvon will be around Zimmermann like Banquo's ghost from MacBeth.

I don't think Zimmerman gives a rat's ass. He's going around like this has given him his fifteen minutes of fame.

Fifteen minutes, or fifteen millennia, there is no escape for Zimmermann, he can hide in any pro-gun state and that memory will be there no matter how he tries to hide it and no matter how many supporters he has.

And here we go again with this same tired ass bs. I think very few people will argue that crime is bad in a lot of low income communities including those that have a high population of black people but you can say that of most communities. Newsflash all groups kill their own more than other groups, more Asians are killed by Asians than other people, more Hispanics killed by other Hispanics and more whites are killed by other whites so this isn't something specific to the black community don't let the hype fool you. The issue with the Trayvon Martin case has always been equal protection under the law and the right to be treated as a citizen first and not a criminal based on your skin tone.

    Great observations, Gorath.

He really has nowhere to escape..he is a pariah in FL. just like Casey Anthony is.They both love to play victim, George is now claiming he is suffering from PTSD from the experience. You can't make this shit up...
