perhaps there needs to be an understanding of what a leader/leadership means;)

just because you give someone the title does not make them a leader
voting someone into a position doesn't make them a leader
hiring someone into a position doesn't not make them a leader

the quiet path to leader/leadership most times is unannounced...not asked for...it is a selfless journey...for the greater good of all not just themselves...it is a person that considers the "we" before "i"...someone that shows you the way...not just how to get there...it is someone that leads by example...they don't toot their own horn...a leader earns respect rather than demanding it...

I disagree a bit on this point. Because, a person voted into office by a majority of people, is the very definition of a leader.

    Definition of leader (n)

    lead·er[ léed?r ]

    • somebody whom people follow: somebody who guides or directs others
    • somebody or something in lead: somebody or something in front of all others, e.g. in a race or procession
    • somebody in charge of others: the head of a nation, political party, legislative body, or military unit

Just because someone was voted into the position doesn't automatically make the person a leader per se. He or she gained the trust of the majority, yes, but being a leader requires action and a guidance. But beyond that, you have to determine what makes a strong leader in the wake of it all.

I see why you might think that way...do you believe that Hilter, Osama Bin Laden, Castro etc were leaders? I mean no disrespect to Obama and believe one day he will make this list but it will be after he leaves the Presidency...I believe that he will do great things without the opposition of a divided congress to hold him back...

leader is a title...embracing the commitment of leadership is entirely up to the individual

So then Obama is a leader then right

his official title is President of the United States of America

leader of the free world...yes he is a leader by title...doesn't mean he hits the top 50 of the world's greatest leaders

why are you arguing in this thread? and every other thread for that matter...can you please get back together with the nice white girl that toned down your post rage

Or we could talk about the people who actually made the list?

The fact of the matter is, last year, directly or indirectly, Obama played a part in: innocent people being killed by our drones, drones being legalized to spy on citizens IN the US, Benghazi, NSA spying on the US, the ACA getting off to a bad start, and that's just off the top of my head.

I know that many of you wish he could just be the monarch for life of the US, but the fact is, there are many, many reasons he is no better than any other politician. Gitmo is still alive and kicking, for starters. I guess people forgot about his 2008 promise. We may not have combat soldiers in Iraq, but we're STILL involved in Iraq and giving them all sorts of weapons to defend Fallujah, etc. And where is the money coming for that? Hmm...let me think.

Let's talk about some of the people who made the list. Gemini mentioned something about Merkel, but didn't elaborate. Care to elaborate on your feelings about the #2 person on the list?

Yes, he is a leader, but the question is whether he demonstrated strong leadership in 2013? Even if you're the most hardcore Obama supporter, I'm sure that you'd agree that he fumbled a bit, though Congress should be blamed a great deal for not cooperating.

But, as leader, he should have more arm pulling to keep the babies under his fingers.

Oopsie, Benghazi was 2012. My bad.

Damn, has it been that long? Time is flying way too quickly.

I am not at all surprised that Pope Francis is #1 on this list...he is looking outside the doctrine of the church at the larger scope of society...embracing a new generation and trying to understand how different it must be from when he was in his 20s...he is humble...inspiring people all over the world to love more...hate less...help one another...be better people...i love that he is a bit of a rebel but in all the right ways...setting an example...

I'm not surprised either. And quite pleased. He's done quite a bit in one year of improving the Church and its image. I applaud him for that and love that he was picked as the Pope. :smt023

What is the obsession with Benghazi on the right?
To your point I think a lot of the promises he made campaigning were things he didn't know were as bad as they were when he got in office. I'm not saying I agree with all his decisions but I do pay attention to certain characteristics with certain people in charge. Some are incredibly out of touch with the common person ie Mitt Romney telling struggling college kids with insane student debt to just borrow the money from their parents as if your average American has tens of thousands of dollars lying around. Then I look at the Affordable Care Act, even though no where close to perfect, allows millions of people to get care that would be otherwise denied because of preexisting conditions and now there is a cap of how much they can charge you for medical costs per year. Now people who couldn't get care can get care and no longer does a sickness have to ruin you financially. Do you have any idea how big that is. Its probably the biggest peace of American human rights legislation signed into law in the last 50 years. Before the crash the number one reason for bankruptcy were medical bills. And something that right wing people seem to conveniently gloss over is dude killed Bin Laden. If it had been a right wing president we would never hear the end of it.
And I want to say I totally agree with what's going on with drones. I am disgusted with this new killing by remote control strategy that doesn't account for innocent civilian life but as someone pointed out before that's how war has always been fought, this is nothing new in fact its far less bloody then f-22s just dropping bombs.

Unfortunately we live in a supposed system of checks and balances. Dude is not a dictator and there are people in congress who have made it clear they will not do anything to help any of the president's agenda.

Of course and sadly, the public are too quick to jump on this particular person seeing that he's a much easier target to pinpoint for their own lack of drive to do something to help improve conditions.

This is how the masses are socialized/trained to think.
Americans fall for game that couldn't fool a 6 week old monkey.

People in 3rd world countries know their politicians ain't shit but bought-off corporate shills.

They know who REALLY runs their country.......ya'll don't.

Then why do anything with even the slightest social benefit? And who owns Elizabeth Warren and Barney Frank?
Its not ALL doom and gloom there are people who care about the people.

Haven't looked at the list, but it's bullshit anyway.

Also, it's bulllshit to hang everything on any president and overlook Congress.

I could agree with your last statement if so many people didn't also blame Bush for everything that's happened in this country since 9/11. Congress played a BIG role in that.

But apparently, what's good for the goose, is not good for the gander? :smt017
