Pope Francis is #1. Very cool. Obama is not on the list. Thoughts? http://www.today.com/news/pope-fran...lds-greatest-leaders-list-no-obama-2D79408674
It's a bullshit list. They have a baseball player and a actress, but not the man who was twice elected to the most powerful position on Earth.
Pope Frrancis certainly took off running, and is practicing what he preached... Why should Obama be on the list? He's been no more influential than Bush was. What he preached has yet to be practiced, particularly in Govt. transparency. Thus, Fortune is correct - “He simply didn't make this year's list of 50 outstanding individuals who have demonstrated rare leadership, leadership in multiple areas or who have demonstrated a long history of leading.” “We have drawn a distinction between leaders and people who are admirable and powerful but who are not transformative leaders,” the magazine said. “Simply running a large organization or serving in an influential role does not meet the threshold to be on this list.” So yeah, this ^
There have been some changes in the Obama administration to make things more transparent per below,Is the Obama administration really the ‘most transparent’ ever? In a live “Hangout” video chat on Google+ last week, President Obama answered a critic’s question about his administration’s secrecy over drone killings and Benghazi with this claim:This is the most transparent administration in history, and I can document how that is the case — everything from every visitor who comes into the White House is now part of the public record. That is something we changed. Every law that we pass, every rule that we implement we put online for everyone to see. Some public records have become more easily accessible through digital means. That’s of some credit to the administration, but also somewhat expected along with the world’s advances in technology and human connectivity. The administration also created the first-ever White House Office of Public Engagement and launched a popular “We The People” petition tool to give citizens a voice in government. That being said, in other areas, his administration has not lived up to his original pledge of being more transparent... "an AP analysis issued this week delivers an even sterner assessment of the state of government transparency under Obama: "The administration cited more legal exceptions it said justified withholding materials and refused a record number of times to turn over files quickly that might be especially newsworthy. Most agencies also took longer to answer records requests, the analysis found. "The government’s own figures from 99 federal agencies covering six years show that half way through its second term, the administration has made few meaningful improvements in the way it releases records despite its promises from Day 1 to become the most transparent administration in history."
Thank for continuously educating these people. Not saying he's anywhere close to perfect but has done a lot of what he promised. Healthcare reform, pulling troops out Iraq, debt forgiveness on student loans. Unfortunately he can't always deliver on all his promises but I guess the President doubles as Santa Claus too lol
this is a joke list by a right wing magazine but i'll bite- obama has had many important moments- his frank talk on the trayvon martin issue, the implementation of obamacare, his raising of the minimum wage, his initiative for black youth. none of the ppl deserve to be ahead of obama.
When I pointed out that Obama wasn't on the list, I was just relaying what the website stated about him not being on the list. I, personally, don't feel he's done enough to warrant being on the list. As for someone assertion that an "actress" is on there, so this list is garbage - she is a humanitarian and does more than most in places that many don't want to go to, so yeah, I think she's worthy of being on the list.
Fortune is a right wing financial mag. It has changed since Malcolm Forbes ruled the publication years ago. To chose a basketball player than the President of the US is very biased.
Totally agree, some celebrities do a great service by using their fame to bring attention to certain issues.
A couple of links for you to peruse... "By all measures, President Obama has outperformed every modern president." http://www.forbes.com/sites/adamhar...lly-could-obama-be-americas-best-president/2/ Read more: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/ar...omic_president_ever_121100.html#ixzz2wZ590tJZ
How dare you use facts and truth lol I'm beginning to see that its just the popular thing to dislike him no matter what he does. In our microwave what have you done for me lately culture unless dude can wave a magic wand and make everything instantly better he's fucking up
I'm not diminishing the good things she has done. She (Angelina Jolie) belongs on a list of the "50 greatest people to use their celebrity for good". However to have her as one of the 50 greatest leaders, at the exclusion of Obama, is why it's a bullshit list.
When you consider that is just for 2013, it's perfectly reasonable to suggests that there's really no reason for him to be in the top 50. Hell, he didn't even make Time's 100 and there are viable reasons for all that. Between the healthcare issues that took shape and the continuous foreign situations, what makes you think that the President even have a shot at making any list? At least with Jolie, she's still doing humanitarian related causes each year, which is why she's still very much a game changer, albeit in small tokens. That does require some leadership in some way or another. You don't need to hold a powerful position to acquire that.
Outperformed how? By doing what? He's just a speach reading corporate puppet just like all the rest of the puppets that preceeded him.
We have gone around and around on this, read the article it gives specific details as to why they say he has outperformed, then we can discuss and not just call names.
Obama got the troops out of Iraq and made it possible for people with preexisting conditions to get healthcare. He ended don't ask don't tell. He's stimulated the economy with cash for clunkers and the 8k rebate on new home purchases. He's made more good decisions than bad. I think everyone was expecting Jesus and got annoyed that's he's just a man. Did you read the data Loki posted.
I did read the article Loki posted. I have it bookmarked. There's no doubt Obama accomplished so much in a short period of time, but I said, the list is based on the 2013 year and none else. He passed the Affordable Care Act and repealed DADT back in 2010, and the stimulus package took place in 2009, among many accomplishments. But none of those were events that took place in 2013. During that year, he didn't get a lot of things done like immigration reform and banning of assault weapons. And on top of that, Edward Snowden really took it upon himself to really diminish any credibility of the federal government due to the spying program the federal government's conducting. And furthermore, the healthcare thing was riddled with problems since its October signing up. So, it was a bad year for the President, and he didn't really recover from much of it.
From Politifact on the progress of the ACA... "Americans are getting more benefits under the law in a number of ways -- including, in some cases, being able to buy affordable insurance for the first time. In addition, insurance purchased in the individual and small group marketplace must meet 10 essential health benefits. This includes coverage for emergency services and hospitalization, prescription drugs, free preventative coverage for things ranging from basic immunizations to HIV screening, and maternity care. The law also caps out-of-pocket costs, providing greater protection from exorbitant hospital bills. The most a person could pay for health care in a year is $6,300; the most a family can pay is $12,600. Before the law passed, some insurers capped annual or lifetime benefits, forcing people who thought they were covered to pay large hospital bills once they passed the threshold. People with pre-existing conditions are also seeing a lot more benefits, since they previously couldn’t buy a policy at all. So it’s a tough sell to say millions are getting less. And for many, they aren’t paying more, either. Our ruling Americans for Prosperity said "millions are paying more and getting less" under Obamacare. We found their explanation of "less" rather dubious. Most people on the individual market are getting more benefits under the law. At worst, they’re paying more to get more, though in many cases they’re actually paying less. We rate this claim False.
