You can complain about Tyler Perry if you want to. He has that niche audiance of Black women who will not let go of him. Like I said before and after there is no "Tyler Perry" for people who love IR WW/BM. I liked Red Tails and the HBO movie as well. What I don't like of the former was the fate of the brother who was in love with the Italian woman.

We don't need a Tyler Perry for those of us who love IR WW/BM. Tyler Perry's audience will not forgive him if he made a film with a WW/BM couple, even if they are supporting characters. This will take an independent film maker(which, of course Perry is)to make these films. I mean, any of us, with the right funding and equipment can make a series of movies, plays, books and tv shows of this experience if we really want to.

The death of Lightning in Red Tails was heroic and sad. And his romance with Sofia was sweet.

I liked Red Tails, but thought it was a little too simplistic. Not sure what I expected, but just wanted more depth.

Unfortunately, we are not at the point where we can base whether or not we will see a black themed, heroic film on if it's good or not? Hollywood does not work that way. Cats need to buy actual movie tickets on the opening weekend for any and all films where black men are the star and focus of a non hood, non comedic, heroic tale. Even if we don't see the actual movie. Buy a ticket.

Because Red Tails didn't make money, we will not see anything along those lines for a while.

Hollywood's take: no one wants to see films about black heroes unless whites are there to help them. If we had turned up at the box office on opening weekend and made it a hit, we'd have a whole different out come. But, a lot of us had no interest in seeing it. Cats thought it looked boring and corny. They figured they'd just Redbox it.

But, we are tired of slave movies? No we're not.

The Blaxploitation films broke that rule in the 1970's. Then came low-budget action films with rappers in them(almost every one of the video or DVD covers on them had one or two rappers holding a gun). The film Ghost Dog: The Way Of The Samurai, directed by Jim Jarmusch and starring Forest Whitaker, Isaac De Bankole, Gene Rufini and Henry Silva was, in my very humble opinion, one of the best of these. Then came Jarmusch's The Limits Of Control with Isaac De Bankole, John Hurt, Tilda Swinton, Bill Murray, and other stars, was original because the actors were not people, but representations of people and their attitudes, strengths and weaknesses(difficult to explain) in the form of a spy/noir plot. Yes. Hollywood is capable but, it is up to the independent film makers who have the imagination and courage to make films outside of Hollywood like Tyler Perry has done(his films have been released through Lionsgate Pictures, a Canadian company). Bob Clark(of Porky's, A Christmas Story, Murder By Decree) was an American film maker who had found a good deal of freedom making films in Canada. Dom De Loiuse's son Peter directs shows in Canada after starring in the 21 Jump Street show.
