I agree with you, but I think it also depends on the individual. I'm not a big eater, nor do I eat much meat, so I can fill up for practically nothing and have it be completely healthy. My ex is huge and would need much more than some beans and cabbage to fill him up. That's why people default to fast food. It's all about choices though and how one chooses to spend their money.

Try pre-packing snack bags with veggies. Sliced bell pepper, baby carrots, grape/cherry tomatoes, jicama...all great to have on the go or snack on while relaxing. They make some really low calorie/fat yogurt dressings now too, if you wanted a little dip. String cheese or apples/celery and pb is also good IMO. Smart snacking is definitely possible.

dr.oz was talking about cheese consumption last week...he didn't say cheese is bad...the problem is that it is in everything...if you are going to eat cheese he recommended that you enjoy it as a snack alone with nothing else...

i have been reading a lot about metabolism and how foods on their own are not necessarily bad but how we combine them in a meal is important...red meat is not all bad (i heard gem say she wanted a steak) steak and a vegetable work better in your system than steak + starch or even steak + fruit

True, red meat does have some benefits. I stay away from it, because I already have direct family history of colon cancer (paternal grandpa died of it, and my dad had it, but thank god we caught it early, had surgery to remove it, and he has remained cancer free since). Interesting synopsis of studies below.

"Although the results vary, studies from around the world have suggested that a high consumption of meat is linked to an increased risk of colon cancer. In all cases the worry is confined to red meat, not chicken."

you can rant...but ranting doesn't solve anything...the fact of the matter is that more people workout and talk fitness/health everyday in this country now than they did in the 50's, 60's & 70's...people didn't go to yoga, pilates, spinning class, kick boxing, step class and adults were not going to a fitness center...but they also didn't eat processed food like we do today...

our society has changed to TV watching, video game playing, eating out food socializing, drinking socializing, processed food on the table, drive through food, calorie busting coffee, soda addiction etc

we have a culture issue in the country...the simple life wasn't good enough in the land of opportunity...we made more money and spent more money...

the conversation has to start somewhere...to just say people are lazy and it's their own choice is not understanding the root of the problem...we didn't get obese overnight as a country...this happened over decades of poor nutrition...at the same time we stopped moving

Repped. The part about the kids infuriates me. Children rely on their parents to set a healthy example and provide nutritious foods. It pisses me off to no end when people act carelessly with their children's health.

interesting...all in moderation when it comes to red meat...portion size and quality of meat...is there any evidence to support that organic (grass-fed) red meat will or will not lead to colon cancer?

Good Point! That is because the starch is a fast burning carb so it causes an insulin spike. When you have an insulin spike your body can better absorb the nutrients from the food. If you are eating steak at the time (depending on the cut) you are absorbing more of the saturated fat.

Hmm, could not find too much info on the difference between organic and non organic red meat risks, I did find this study from England below that basically states no conclusions can be drawn yet...

"Is there a difference in fat content? Intensive methods of livestock production have resulted in meat with a high fat content. Wild cattle contains more than three times as much protein as fat compared to domestic cattle who have half as much protein as fat. As well as increasing the total fat content, intensive feeding changes the ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids. In domestic animals, the ratio is 1 to 50. In wild animals, it is 1 to 2.3.
There is strong though not totally convincing evidence that total fat and saturated fat increase the risk of colorectal and prostate cancers. There may well be a link with breast cancer. Meat and dairy products are the main sources of fat and saturated fat in the British diet.

But is organic meat more like intensively grown meat or more like meat from wild animals? There are some comparative studies on the quality of meat from animals reared in organic and intensive farming systems but no conclusions about fat content can be drawn from them. We don't know how much total fat and how much saturated fat organic red meat has compared to conventional and wild meat. Is there a difference in contamination by growth hormones? Growth hormones are given to animals so that nutrients are more efficiently absorbed from the feed and converted into muscle rather than fat. Where used, they are administered in implants around the ear or as a feed additive. There are three kinds:
1 Natural steroid hormones – oestradiol, progesterone, testosterone,
2 Synthetic steroid hormones – Trenbolone, Finkplix, Ralgro, Stilbenes including DES (diethylstilboestrol).
    3 Phyto-oestrogens derived from plants – Zeranol."

Kind of a weird coincidence, but today I had a full-fledged adult ask me what name a vegetable had, which turned out to be a beet. I should point out that the video was filmed in West Virginia one of the unhealthiest states in the nation, so it definitely would not be representative of the whole country. I can't prove one way or another the authenticity of this clip. However, my life has taught me that sometimes just because something is too shocking to believe, is absolutely no indicator as to whether or not it is true.

It's called food-combining. And it follows a cycle of absorption, assimilation and elimination. And you eat according to two 8 hr cycles. Fruit by itself or nothing upon rising until noon.
Then for the next 8 hrs, fruit first if you want it, followed 20 mins later by a starch and starch and vegies, etc.
Then 2 hrs later, you can eat again more starch or protein. If you eat Protein instead of starch, it's eaten solo, don't combine it with other proteins and its 4 hrs wait until a starch meal. Its hard to understand it, until you do, but you feel good and drop A LOT of weight.
