JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — A 33-year-old woman could end up in prison for 60 years when she’s retried for firing a shot in the direction of her estranged husband and two of his children.

Marissa Alexander was convicted in 2012 on three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and sentenced to 20 years — three counts served concurrently. An appeals court tossed the conviction, saying the judge made a mistake in shifting the burden to Alexander to prove she acted in self-defense.

Assistant State Attorney Richard Mantei told the Florida Times-Union the state is simply following sentencing laws in seeking 60 years.

The same court that ordered Alexander’s retrial ruled that when a defendant is convicted of multiple counts from the same crime, judges must make the sentences consecutive.

Critics say it’s outrageous to seek triple the original sentence.

I'm shocked, horrified and disgusted with this. Quite frankly, I thought they (state criminal justice community and public officials) were balking at all of the negative publicity they have been receiving from her case and were going throw it out.

Hey do you know whats going on with this? What exactly is she being charged with now and how are they getting around the issue of double jeopardy?? Have not found anything on this yet.

Florida has openly declared war on Black people.

I wouldn't say the state has. But I certainly think that the NRA lobby's irresponsible push to flood every state with guns in the interest of the manufacturers for which the organization is a shill, when coupled with media-fed irrational fear of black males and latent racist feelings on the part of individuals is resulting in the shooting of innocent victims. Having said that, I also think there's some poor charging decisions on the part of the prosecutor in terms of what charges to try the defendant for, etc. I think the awareness of how idiotic those laws are and the disregard for human life they feed are now coming under more careful scrutiny. I think the Dunn verdict is going to be more representative of what we see henceforth.

The state declares war when they fail to protect and treat every citizen as the same. Florida will never see any of my dollars which sucks because I always wanted to go to the Keys but oh well thank God I've got family in multiple Caribbean countries.

Fly direct from NYC to MIA or FLL. You'll spend a significant portion of the trip over the ocean anyway, so you won't actually set foot in the 'South'.

Yes, it is. I've had enough of the fricking NRA to last a lifetime.

I don't care if they put this woman behind bars for 100 years. It won't matter.

Obama is going to give her a Presidential pardon before he leaves office.
    At least he'd better.
