You really think an group of white kids in an suburban fucking school are that damn dumb? Unbelievable. Gosh use some common sense. That shit was no better than those horrible infomercials that run at 3AM in the morning. Kids got paid to perpetuate your typical retarded ass Americans.

What parent would really be like "ok sure, go ahead and show the world how fucking dumb my child is and how much of an failure I and the school system is to them" White at that.

Reality TV is hardly ever, reality.

They could be a bunch of learning disabled kids, the clip doesn't give enough information.
I use to work at an after school program in undergrad and I don't remember them being that astute but then again 12 years ago we didn't have an internet and other learning tools the way we do now.
Truthfully I think its not as big of a problem because identifying the food isn't going to help them since they aren't the ones preparing the food for themselves. At that age its probably better for them to understand portion control and just being active. When I was kid there weren't really any obese kids certainly not like the kids today, we played more and ate a lot less.
Remember when this kid use to be fat? He'd be considered average if not thinner now

I meant rural area, should have been clear. Is it because they're white?

I don't like excuses. The reason why so many Americans are fat/obese is because they don't want to take the initiative and do something about it.

I recently went on vacation in Mexico and couldn't believe how fat the Americans down there were. It was a disgrace.

An educated guess by the the room's decor, lack of diverse children, the children's lack of accents, oh and the fact that ABC prefer's to shoot it's shows in middle class and above communities.

I agree about the fitness aspect. My kids school pushes regular activity on many levels (my babies participate in running club there...not that they're like their mama or anything lol).

Those kids not recognizing veggies leads me to believe they're not eating veggies. If you showed my near 6 year old a bell pepper, he'd know what it is even though he snacks on them in slices instead of whole. The point is to raise awareness and incorporate your kids into a healthy lifestyle. Have them help pick out the fruits and veggies from the store, have them in the kitchen when you're making dinner or cutting up snacks. Get them involved instead of just allowing them to grab a lunchable from the fridge.

Again I don't think it matters if they can recognize it, adults know what full vegetables look like and could care less they go straight for the junk.
Me and Tarshi had a conversation about that years ago and I truly believe its not ignorance its purely what tastes good. It comes down to a double cheeseburger from Mcdonalds not only tastes good but its accessible and cheap. I think that's a bigger issue accessibility and expense.

I can understand 6 year olds not recognising an Aubergine or an Artichoke, the Cauliflower was worrying as was the Tomatoes, although they're pretty big tomatoes by UK standards (1/3 of the size here mostly) and remember kids of that age will cross reference size as a important factor, if they are used to smaller, they will not automatically conclude they are the same thing.

This Video from the same series made me feel sick when I watched it on TV, the shiny candy bit Ickkk.

I've been taken in by Muesli dressed up like this, then you check on the back when you get home, only to find it's double the calories than the bog standard value one you have in the cupboard already and ..........has a shitload of sugar in it.

When I read the first page of this thread, I was so irritated, I had to step away for a day before responding. I see this and hear the excuses every damn day. I agree with Saty and TDK - this is all about excuses and going for what's easy.

If one argues the poverty line as a cause for obesity- I spent most of my life in poverty, working three jobs, going to school, and still was well versed enough in nutrition to make decent choices. Yes I've got some extra pounds on, but they are my choice. I choose to have that extra glass of wine or bake stuff that I know damn well I'll be enjoying later on. (actually that's not so true now because I've made the choice to become ridiculous fit this year, so the wine/baking/ bad food choices are long gone).

Very few people have medical conditions that cause obesity. Even hypothyroidism, which is more common than Cushings for example, is widely treated thus just an excuse to not move and make decent food choices.

One study showed that morbidly obese adults in America move vigorously for ONE HOUR A YEAR.

    That's a choice.

Fat kids are due to parents that aren't taking responsibility for their own creations.

    Rant over.

Now I could be wrong but I think another factor for obesity could be the shifted role of women and increase of single parent households (decrease of couples actually staying together).

A few decades ago it was common for couples to get married and usually it would be a classic scenario: Husband earns the bread by working, wife stays at home to raise the kids and do housework, including cooking.

These days the economic situation doesn't allow most couples to only have 1 person working to earn money. Usually both work now.
Also there are many single parents now, people no more stay together, and being a single parent is not very easy, time wise and often financially either.
There may not be much time, and there are plenty of things to squeeze into only 24 hours.
So a person may not want to stand in the kitchen for too long with a very tight schedule, especially if the financial situation isn't that great -and then fast food or food with not so great nutrition comes in handy and convenient.
With little time on one's hands and possibly not having a babysitter for a younger kid, one may also not be willing or able to invest much time into physical fitness, such as gym, running, etc.

I'm just waiting for someone to call your medical degree and background in medicine bs because you won't support laziness and lack of responsibility lol.

I remember studying this very thing in grad. It's part of the cost benefit analysis of moral hazards and type 1 errors. Basically as things become easier in one aspect we suffer in others. More convenient food ironically leads to less exercise and more weight gain

its bullshit to say its too expensive to eat healthy. true that organic stuff is expensive but you can buy dry beans get cabbage and other of like. u just have to take the time 1 or 2 days and cook it for multiple days. actually its more cost effective to do that

Very true. Just started doing it. It makes things veey simple. Snacking can be difficult to give up though but very doable.
