Need a little motivation for that new year’s resolution to hit the gym more often? New research has found that there are some types of exercise that might lower your diabetes risk.

Doctors have known for a while about the correlation between diabetes and exercise, but until now it was thought to be aerobic workouts like jogging that lowered your risk. But a recent study of almost 100,000 women found a new link.

Women who did muscle-strengthening and conditioning workouts—hitting the weight room—lowered their diabetes risk by 14 percent for every 60 minutes of exercise per week. For those who did those workouts for more than 150 minutes a week, their diabetes risk was lowered by 40 percent.

Bench press not your thing? The study found that, surprisingly, lighter forms of exercise like yoga also counted. Researchers speculated it may be because those forms of exercise prevent the loss of lean muscle mass or affect the body’s use of glucose.

But don’t give up your morning jog completely yet! It seems the magic formula is a combination of aerobic exercise and strengthening workouts. Women who did 150 minutes of aerobic exercise and 60 minutes of muscle-strengthening workouts per week dropped their diabetes risk by two thirds.

Glad to see the yoga info. I was wondering how effective it is for weight loss as well.

Well, I never tried yoga, only pilates and callanetics years ago.
I think all of the above are good choices to get fit.
Since you have problems with the knees, it might be a "softer" approach to fitness for you.
    No jumping, no weights etc.
But every muscle you build up will help you with weight loss, since muscles are the ones burning calories.

I remember a video that was posted (by TDK?) of a guy that could barely walk.
After he started yoga, he rapidly improved and at the end of the video he was able to RUN!

Yep. I just watched that video again on FB. That's why I was thinking of yoga. I'd be curious to know if he changed his eating habits too or if just the addition of yoga allowed him to lose weight.

Edit: I did note that the yoga he does is DDP yoga, a high intensity form of yoga and is very cardio. Probably answers my first question. Lol

Yeah they were just on Shark Tank trying to figure out a way to bring it to mass markets. The results are inspiring you should try it out or Jillian Michaels who has a bunch of free stuff on youtube

Leotards, sexy barefeet and flexible legs would be just too much of a strain on my focus. ...I would not learn a damn thing in a yoga class with women......
