It's only two episodes in but I'm already hooked. Anyone else watching this gritty about the pirate way of life?

Be sure to catch the second episode if you liked the first episode. Why they didn't just make it into one big two hour long premiere episode is beyond me.

Roger that. I'll make sure to do.

My cable provider doesn't offer Starz as a part of their 'basic' premium package.

Hard to justify purchasing Starz just to watch one series.

I had not seen it yet. But it does look great and very accurate. Being a pirate is not an easy life.

It's not all that accurate. Fuck, it cares more about getting performers with pretty looks than it does about getting history correct.

I doubt I'll keep watching. I could better accept such bubblegum TV if there was a black male character who was an equal among the pirates (as was the case of many in real life). Instead the one black dude we get is some old dude who acts as a sort of father figure to the main white female lead. He won't be getting any hot chicks. The hot chicks, of all colors and stripes, are for the white guys exclusively. No thanks. I'd rather stick to True Detective in which I at least get an intelligent story to go along with the never-ending fixation of white male leads.

Co-sign 100%, I gave this a chance as well, but in the last episode, the older Black guy father figure did not even stand up for himself when insulted (he is essentially gelded), the tough White guy pirate had to step in and make the guy who did the insulting apologize. A small positive is that he is portrayed as intelligent and fore-thinking, but you are right, no way he gets any female attention, despite working in a brothel.

    Nope. Looks cheesy.

It is still early though . . . it looks like the story is well written and the more prominent Black characters could present themselves later on in the season.

I didn't really like the first episode so I watched the 2nd one first . . . then watching the pilot made more sense. Third episode was very enticing and stands as a harbinger for great episodes to come as they set sail to overtake that Spanish treasure gallieon.
