My question to you is: How do you discover new bands/artists? There's always lots of new music out there, and definitely a lot more artists than the top 40 reflects, since there's always new names coming and going. For me... I typically listen to older stuff anyways. Sometimes I use Pandora... when I can trick it to thinking I'm not in Canada lol. Sometimes I just look at the charts and see what's currently popular. Other times I browse the "what song are you listening to" (or whatever it's called ) thread here, or ask friends for suggestions. Lots to listen to! So... Where do you find new music? What captures your attention about someone new?
I read a lot of music press, largely online sites like stereogum (my current favorite), pitchfork and metacritic. If you can stand the snobbery, Robert Christgau maintains a respectable database of music that goes back several decades. Year end best of . . . lists are good.
In the late 80's, I discovered the oldies. In 1990, I rediscovered Motown, even though I grew up with Motown. I guess it was the time when I "heard" music, but I didn't really "listen." Now I listen to music on the radio or Youtube, or if I am fortunate, see a live band.
Believe it or not but Myspace is still pretty good for that. Also out here word of mouth is big. New bands pop up weekly.
it's not really an age thing you just have to be plugged into that whole scene. We're the same age kid it's just that one of my boys owns a studio and he's constantly updating me on how things are done.
I just browse the Internet for non mainstream shit. Go to blogspots and download whatever looks like nobody has heard of. If I hear someone featured on a song I like, I'll check them out. I love stumbling on original music something was sampled from. Also, soundclick and other music self promotion websites. Back home, I would dig through my mom's vynils and cds and just pick sour out.
