Well fellas I am sure many of us who have been shopping with our girlfriends have gotten to the point where we could not stand it another second but we able to hold it together just enough not to get to that breaking point. Well that was not the case with Tao Hsiao.

After 5 hours of lugging bags from store to store (in a mall full of people christmas shopping) and he had enough and wanted to leave. His girlfriend though insisted on going to one more store to get some shoes, he insisted she already had enough shoes to which she replied by calling him cheap and accused him of ruining christmas, his last retort was to throw the bags down and leap over the safety rail.

Very sad. 38 and five hours of shopping with his girlfriend pushed him to suicidal extremes. This is why a little distraction like a good book or listening to music will give relief during those times. But, it must be pointed out that what Tao Hsiao was going through was a test in the relationship. Hsiao was ringside to his girlfriend's hobby, shopping. The story did not say whether or not Hsiao's girlfriend was using his money or her own. But, he spent five hours with his girlfriend. I'm sure shopping was not what he had planned for this day. I don't believe his girlfriend is to blame. He did his part and after all that time, he gave up. We see it all the time in tv commercials, shows and movies. In these mediums, it is merely comedic. But it was tragic for Tao Hsiao. :(

I love shopping but will never understand why women drag their men with them.
I feel so sorry for all those guys who are always standing in the way, feeling misplaced, bored and annoyed.

If you need advice, bring your best friend, a sister, a female coworker....
Most guys will tell you what you want to hear just to get it over with anyway :D

It's too bad, he couldn't just say "I'm not going." We don't know how pushy she was toward him, but it would have been better for all involved if he had opted out of going, whether she left him over it or not. Five hours is frickin' ridiculous. So much for the better life promised by consumer capitalism and the culture of 'more'. The endless pursuit of things can be a stressful and empty existence, and ultimately provides little real happiness or satisfaction. We also don't know what other stresses there were on him, whether in their relationship, financial, professional, or elsewhere. Quite a sad story.

the holidays are supposed to be a joyous time of year...unfortunately the commercialism of the holiday has turned the celebration into mass chaos...tempers are short circuited...stress runs high...people overspend...they commit to too much...expectations are unreasonable...family can be demanding...

this is a sad story...just the beginning of many tragic events that tend to unveil themselves during the holidays:(

A few years ago, during Christmas week I witnessed a man getting rolled against another car like a cigar after the man had an argument with his girlfriend. She got in the car and just pinned and rolled him until he fell to the street as she sped away. His knee was injured and I called 911. The police and paramedics arrived a short time later to ask questions of the man and treat his injuries. He refused to speak to the police. He kept saying that he didn't want to do that to her and her kids because it was Christmas time. The police officer reminded him that his girlfriend's days were numbered and that they were going to get to her soon. But, he still refused to speak to the officer. After her was bandaged, he walked away. The officer shook my hand and said," Well, another case is solved." I didn't want to argue with him.
"If this was an episode of Law And Order," I said."Someone would probably say that it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas."
The officer told me that a lot of deaths have occurred during this time of year than anytime. He told me the story about a man who was stabbed by his wife. Every time this happened, he said that it wasn't his wife's fault. But, then he ended up dead. Before he died, he said it wasn't his wife's fault. But then, his widowed wife mentioned to her family that she killed her husband. Her family turned her into the police.

Those stories are so sad. Don't the police there follow up on witnesses stories? Here they would not take the gentleman's word for it they would investigate further.

I wonder if that woman feels any remorse at all for browbeating him like that.

doubtful...she will just find another one and do the same thing...the ratio of men to women in China gives her many options...unfortunately he felt his options had run out...

men in the usa think they have it bad...can you imagine being a man in china...talk about a sausage fest:(

That's the end result of valuing male children over females and aborting females. I was married to a real shrew, but I can't imagine being harassed to death.
