That is a damned shame. I wonder who called in that report to the Houston PD? What story did the caller hand them to react the way they had done? I would not be surprised if the caller is having a good laugh right now. The Houston PD owes them all a very public apology. There was a notarized note of guardianship. A signed legal document. I guess this wouldn't happen even if the two men were white and gay. But, alas, this happened to two black dance teachers. The caller must've made an assumption upon seeing them and decided to play hero. SMDH

The cops acted reckless and they went to far and I think race is probably a factor. However, you cant disregard the fact that it was also two grown men with a underage girl.

 

Quite true, but there's no excuse for what sounds like a violent arrest if they put up no resistance, failing to apologize, not immediately relenting when they produced a signed statement from the mother that they were able to verify with the mother, and the difficulties she had in having her daughter released.

 

unbelievable...if I was that girls mother I would be looking for more than an apology...they should file a suit against the Houston police department for harassment...all three of them:smt012

I think the cops overreacted thinking they were pimps trafficking a underage white girl.

If the cops stated that at the start, we never would have heard this story.

 

I agree with Thump, I don't blame the cops for stopping them... but the cops were wrong for ignoring their right of guardianship.

 

That's such bs. If they were two white men there wouldn't have been any suspicions and we know it. So basically another situation where all you need is brown skin to be suspicious

Police have the right of reasonable suspicion. I cannot argue that fact. I feel that if the officers looked at the signed document of guardianship and called the girl's mother to verify, it wouldn't go this far.

 

Because I live in the United States. There are certain cultural norms I'm aware of even if you aren't my friend.

 

The article makes it sound as if they did but still didn't release her. I gathered that from the section where they told the mother that she would have to fly there to retrieve her child rather than releasing her to the teachers until they finally relented at the end. I could be wrong, that's just my impression at first read.

That being said, any child authorized to be somewhere should be allowed to be there. How many younger children travel with their athletics coach to all day sporting tournaments that may require an hour or two of driving?

 

I wonder if the the Houston PD had charged the instructors. If they were charged, what was it for? Kidnapping? Not likely. Child molestation and rape? No way. Driving while black with a minor white female? Then school bus and handicap transport drivers are guilty, too. Like the song goes, "The eyes of Texas are upon you."
